Steam’s User Base Skyrockets, Outpacing PlayStation by 50%
In the ever-evolving world of gaming, numbers speak volumes, and recent estimates suggest that Steam is making quite a statement. According to Simon Carless from GameDiscoverCo, Valve’s digital marketplace is hitting around 200 million monthly active users, which is over 50% larger than the entire PlayStation ecosystem.
While Valve hasn’t released official Steam statistics in a while, Carless utilized some straightforward math and alternative data sources to gauge Steam’s growth trajectory. He pointed out that Steam had an average of 31.1 million monthly active users in the EU as of mid-2025, a number that has been echoed in various reports. By comparing this figure to Steam’s overall audience, utilizing public bandwidth data for reference, Carless arrived at an impressive estimate of about 198 million monthly active users (MAUs) for Steam, with the possibility that it’s already crossed the 200 million mark.
To put this in perspective, back in 2021, Valve announced that Steam had 132 million MAUs. Fast forward to this year, and they claimed a steady increase of about 3.4 million concurrent users annually since they hit 25 million five years ago. While it’s a bit of a leap to assume that concurrent users and MAUs grew at the same rate, it gives us a rough ballpark. Some estimates suggest that Steam’s current number could fall between 213 to 221 million MAUs, depending on which baseline number you start with.
For context, a recent report from Sony indicated that PlayStation had around 125 million monthly active users as of March 2026. This figure is notably lower than Steam’s counts from five years ago. If we adjust Steam’s more conservative estimates, it aligns well with the 187 million users needed to represent that 50% lead over PlayStation.
Amid this growth, Sony seems to be shifting its focus away from the traditional gaming console image, looking towards other avenues like monitors and speakers to diversify its brand. As the gaming landscape changes, it’s clear that Steam is not just a player but a dominant force in the PC gaming arena.
