Nintendo Switch’s Journey Continues Beyond Europe: What’s Next?
Nintendo has recently shared some big news regarding its original Switch console, and it looks like there’s still life left in it—at least outside of Europe! Just a few days ago, the gaming giant announced that it plans to discontinue the original Switch in Europe next year. However, fans worldwide can breathe a sigh of relief as this decision doesn’t affect other regions.
In a statement to the gaming community, Nintendo clarified that they will continue selling the Switch in areas not covered by their European division. “We plan to continue selling Nintendo Switch outside of regions where Nintendo of Europe conducts business,” they noted, putting many gamers’ worries to rest.
The original Switch, along with its Lite and OLED variants, will still be produced throughout 2026. Nintendo assured players that these consoles will remain available throughout the year in Europe, but production will officially wrap up in 2027. They announced that by mid-February 2027—almost a decade after the Switch first launched back in March 2017—sales to retailers for the entire Switch family will cease.
Moreover, Nintendo confirmed that online sales through their Nintendo Store will also come to an end around the same time. The focus seems to be shifting toward the upcoming Switch 2, which is set to debut next year with exciting features like a replaceable battery, aligning with new waste reduction regulations in Europe.
While the original Switch’s future appears to be winding down, Nintendo is clearly gearing up for a new chapter with the Switch 2. For those eager to see what’s coming next, there are plenty of exciting games lined up for release this year and beyond to keep your gaming appetite satisfied!
