Game Devs Push Back Against AI Justification in Game Development
A recent release on Steam has ignited a fiery debate within the gaming community, particularly among developers. This stems from comments made by the creator of Bahast, a dark fantasy idle RPG, who argued that incorporating generative AI was crucial for speeding up the development process. They also mentioned that they would be willing to cut back on AI usage if the game received adequate financial support.
The developer, known as Aura Triolo on Bluesky, pointed out a disclosure on Steam stating: “As a solo developer, it was nearly impossible to release this game in a timely manner without utilizing AI. I’m open to reducing AI usage if our funding becomes stable. Thanks for your support!” This statement has become a focal point of contention regarding the role of AI in game development.
While some industry leaders, such as Tim Sweeney from Epic Games, advocate for AI-assisted development as a future necessity, many indie developers have voiced strong opposition to this approach. A recent conversation with over 30 developers revealed a range of perspectives criticizing the reliance on AI, despite claims of increased efficiency.
Developers have taken to social media to express their disbelief at the justification for AI use. Triolo remarked, “‘If you pay me maybe I’ll use LESS AI’ is a new desperate plea I haven’t seen before.” Fellow developer David Lindsey Pittman from Minor Key Games chimed in, stating that the solo developer narrative doesn’t resonate with those who have successfully created games without AI assistance. Alexandre Stroukoff, from Squeakross studio, advised developers to refine their project scopes rather than complain about resources.
Another solo developer, known as Mtgames, shared their experience, emphasizing that they create all their assets manually out of love for the craft. Ryan Nurse, the mind behind Altrix Studios and its retro games, highlighted that, aside from minimal costs, he hasn’t needed to spend extensively to develop his projects. He criticized the “no money” excuse as weak in the context of using generative AI.
Interestingly, a recent survey showed that most Steam users aren’t overly concerned about AI in games, although the survey’s findings may not accurately reflect the views of the wider gaming community. Sony has expressed excitement about AI, suggesting it holds significant promise for generating synthetic assets and foundational technology for their strategy.
