ZeniMax Online Studios Shrinks Back to Past Workforce Levels After Layoffs

In a recent update, it has come to light that ZeniMax Online Studios, the team behind Elder Scrolls Online, is back to its employee count from around 2015-2018. This comes after a round of layoffs that followed the cancellation of their ambitious MMO project, Blackbird. Interestingly, this situation mirrors a recent statement from id Software, indicating they too are down to a similar headcount as when they were working on Doom (2016).

During an event at the Elder Scrolls Online Tavern in Hesse, Germany, developers Jason Barnes and Jessica Folsom shared this update with fans. According to Baratron, a moderator from the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages Discord, the studio is now operating at the same size as they were when they rolled out the well-received Wrothgar and Summerset expansions. This development has fans hoping for ongoing content, despite the unsettling layoffs.

For context, the Wrothgar DLC was launched in 2015, followed by Summerset in 2018, both of which were celebrated by players. While the layoffs are undoubtedly sad for everyone involved, including the gaming community, it doesn’t necessarily mean that ESO is heading towards a standstill in terms of new content. It’s important to remember that the game industry is always evolving, and the challenges faced today are not uncommon.

However, it does raise valid concerns. The departure of 213 employees from ZeniMax Online and 136 from id Software signifies a significant shift, one that many in the industry are wary of. When studios revert to previous staffing levels, it can feel like a step back, especially when considering the growth and progress made over the years.

While some may argue that this is a necessary transition for the company, it can’t help but evoke mixed feelings. It’s worth noting that legacy studios like Bungie and BioWare have also experienced similar layoffs while trying to maintain their output, yet it didn’t quite recreate their golden days. The gaming landscape has changed dramatically over the last decade, and bringing back the past isn’t as straightforward as merely counting heads.

As the gaming community remains engaged with developments from ZeniMax and id Software, it will be interesting to see how this shift affects the future of games like Elder Scrolls Online. The hope is that despite the changes, the passion for creating captivating content remains intact.
