Josh Sawyer Shares His Ideal Ending for Fallout: New Vegas

Fallout: New Vegas, the expansive RPG that has captured the hearts of many gamers, is known for its murky factions and tough moral choices. Players often find themselves navigating through a gritty wasteland where every decision leads to one of four unsatisfactory outcomes. While these endings can be enjoyable, none of them offer a perfect resolution where everyone walks away happy. Let’s face it, the Mojave isn’t exactly a paradise.

In a recent chat with Steven Lake on The Examined Game, Josh Sawyer, the mastermind behind New Vegas, shared his thoughts on what he considers the best of the less-than-ideal options available to players. For him, the path of independence shines the brightest amidst the chaos. “It’s a tough call,” Sawyer mentioned. “While some fans might back figures like Caesar, it feels risky to hand over control to someone like him or Mr. House.” He added that the New California Republic (NCR) also has its fair share of issues, making it hard to fully support them despite their seemingly noble intentions.

For Sawyer, the independent route for New Vegas seems to be the least problematic choice. “I know it will be messy and full of bureaucracy, but it’s untested,” he explained. “Why not give it a shot?” Obsidian made sure to illustrate that independence comes with its own set of challenges, including the potential for rampant corruption and dysfunction.

Personally, I can relate to Sawyer’s take. In my own playthrough, I found a non-canon fifth option that suited my frustration with the constant power struggles. When Mr. House asked me to eliminate the Brotherhood of Steel, I decided I’d had enough. I packed my bags and ventured back into the unforgiving desert, leaving all the chaos behind. Was I a bit worn out after countless hours in the Mojave? Absolutely. But walking away from humanity’s last remnants to fade into the sands felt like the true spirit of a wasteland warrior.

On another note, if you haven’t heard, Josh Sawyer is reportedly working on a new Fallout project at Obsidian. However, this news comes amid some tough times for Xbox, as they’ve recently undergone significant layoffs, affecting around 25% of the studio’s workforce. Let’s hope for the best as we wait to see what the future holds for this beloved franchise!
