Major Layoffs at Zenimax Online Studios: A Setback for Elder Scrolls Online Content
Big news is shaking up the Elder Scrolls Online community as recent layoffs at Zenimax Online Studios raise concerns about the future of content updates. Morgan Goin, a former senior encounter designer for the game, was among those affected and has shared her worries about the studio’s ability to keep up with update schedules.
Following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard for a whopping $75 (approx. Rs 20,850) billion, the company has initiated its fifth round of layoffs, with a notable impact on Zenimax. This studio has already faced significant cuts in the previous year, leading to the cancellation of Project Blackbird and the exit of several key figures from the team. This time, reports suggest that nearly half of the developers working on the Elder Scrolls MMO have lost their jobs, alongside staff from id Software, the team behind Doom.
Despite Bethesda’s attempts to downplay the situation by claiming their team size is comparable to what it was in 2015, former staff members have painted a different picture. Goin expressed her shock over the number of layoffs, estimating that some departments have been reduced to just a quarter of their former strength. She candidly noted, “We’re not going to be able to put out the amount of content at the speed that we were… or anything approaching that.”
Andrew Young, another veteran content designer with the game, revealed that Elder Scrolls Online has essentially been funding other less successful projects. While specifics were not disclosed, it’s clear that titles like The Elder Scrolls Blades and Legends didn’t meet expectations, possibly highlighting a trend of underperforming games within Zenimax.
This wave of layoffs isn’t just about numbers; it leads to the loss of key talent. The exits of prominent figures such as studio head Joseph Burba, executive producer Susan Kath, game director Rich Lambert, and production director Ala Diaz could have lasting effects on the studio’s future direction. Current and former developers have voiced that creating new Fallout and Elder Scrolls games will be tougher than ever due to these cuts, with the loss of experience and institutional knowledge being described as “staggering.”
As fans of the Elder Scrolls franchise, we’ll have to keep a close eye on how these changes unfold and what it means for the future of our beloved MMO. Only time will tell if Zenimax can rebound from this setback and continue delivering the rich content we’ve come to love.
