Major Changes Coming to Path of Exile: Goodbye to Socket Colors!
Exciting news for all Path of Exile fans! The developers at Grinding Gear Games have decided to shake things up in the upcoming expansion, Curse of the Allflame, by eliminating one of the game’s most notorious features: socket colors. For those unfamiliar, Path of Exile has always had these red, green, and blue circular sockets on gear, which serve as the backbone of how players customize their characters. Instead of learning skills directly, players slot various skill gems into these sockets. However, this system could be quite the headache for newcomers, especially during those early game hours.
Many players, including myself, have faced the frustration of trying to fit a skill gem into an item only to find that the colors don’t match. Sure, there were ways to work around this, but it often felt like an unnecessary obstacle. With the new expansion, most items will feature gray sockets, meaning they will be compatible with any skill gem you find, simplifying the whole process and allowing for a smoother gameplay experience.
This decision wasn’t made lightly. Game designer Octavian acknowledged that he’s never really found socket colors to be an engaging aspect of the game. He expressed that his views were influenced by his long history with Path of Exile, stating, “I’ve had a bit of an axe to grind for a number of years now.”
Game director Mark Roberts chimed in, sharing that the change aims to make Path of Exile more inviting for new players and to encourage those who may have found the game too complex to give it another shot. They are committed to removing barriers that could deter newcomers, even with the much-anticipated Path of Exile 2 on the horizon.
In addition to the socket overhaul, the expansion will introduce a crafting bench in every town. Think of it as a more accessible version of Minecraft’s Crafting Table, but instead, you’ll be using it to enhance your gear with essential stats like elemental resistances. Previously, this crafting feature was confined to your personal hideout, which many new players overlooked. With this change, the crafting bench will be readily available across the game world.
Roberts also hinted that the Curse of the Allflame won’t just stop at socket colors. The new league will rework existing content like Abyss and Legion, which haven’t seen much love in years. For instance, Abyss will adopt a new gameplay style similar to PoE 2, where players follow green fissures in the ground to battle emerging foes. And fans should expect even more changes in future leagues, with hints dropped about revamping the Bestiary mechanic next.
Mark your calendars—Curse of the Allflame is set to launch on July 24, and it looks like it will be a game-changer for both new and seasoned players alike!
