Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse – Why It Looks Like the Netflix Anime (But Isn’t!)

Remember that massive buzz when Konami finally dropped a teaser for a brand-new Castlevania game back in February? We all lost our minds! The trailer for what we now know as Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse had an art style and color palette that looked uncannily similar to the popular Netflix anime series, leading many of us to wonder if it was a direct continuation or even co-developed by the anime’s studio, Powerhouse Animation.

Well, we finally have some clarity straight from Konami. In a recent chat, the folks behind the iconic vampire-hunting franchise confirmed that while there isn’t an explicit, direct story continuity between the game and the Netflix show, that striking visual similarity was absolutely intentional. It wasn’t just a coincidence!

Tsutomu Taniguchi, the series producer, shed some light on this design choice. “We know that there are so many fans of the anime series who’ve never played the games before,” he explained. “So even though obviously we wanted to put the game at the forefront of our ideas when we were directing, we really did want to make sure that everyone felt welcome, especially the anime fans who’ve never played the games.” That’s a super smart move to bring new blood (pun intended!) into the gaming side of the Castlevania universe.

Emmanuel Nouaille, the creative director from Evil Empire, the studio developing the game, echoed this sentiment. He clarified that there aren’t any “specific references” from the anime directly inserted into Belmont’s Curse. Instead, the Netflix show’s overall artistic vibe and cinematographic approach served as a huge source of inspiration. “Through the art direction and through the music and the story, I think we are very close to the cinematographic aspect of the series,” Nouaille stated. “This is what we want to capture and want to replicate. I think cinematography is more important than a specific reference to the game.”

So, essentially, they’re aiming to capture the epic, dramatic feel and visual flair of the anime without being restricted by its storyline. It’s about creating an atmosphere that feels familiar and appealing to anime fans, while still delivering a fresh, standalone Castlevania gaming experience. As Taniguchi puts it, “There’s not a wall between the game and the anime. We’re really hoping that people who’ve only watched the anime also enjoy the game.”

On a side note, the developers didn’t mention anything about the future of the Castlevania anime on Netflix. It’s been a while since the last season, and fans are definitely eager for news. But for now, we can all look forward to Belmont’s Curse, which is set to be the first game to follow in the legendary footsteps of Symphony of the Night since 2008. We can’t wait to sink our teeth into it!
