Matt Damon Wants Next Jason Bourne Film to Revisit Franchise Roots!
Hold onto your passports, Bourne fans! It looks like we might finally be getting some concrete movement on a new Jason Bourne film, and none other than Matt Damon himself has given us a hopeful update. The actor, currently busy with a string of high-profile projects, recently shared insights into the future of his iconic amnesiac super-spy, confirming that discussions are well underway.
Speaking about the potential return of the beloved action hero, Damon revealed he’s been collaborating with the brilliant Edward Berger, acclaimed director behind hits like All Quiet on the Western Front and Conclave. “There’s a great director named Ed Berger – he did All Quiet on the Western Front,” Damon stated, emphasizing Berger’s talent. “He’s a wonderful director, and we’re talking about it. We’re just trying to figure it out. We’re trying to nail the story down because I’d love to do it.”
But here’s the kicker that will surely excite long-time fans: Damon’s main condition for returning is that the new movie must “be like the first three.” This is fantastic news for those who cherished the gritty realism and intense action of The Bourne Identity (2002), The Bourne Supremacy (2004), and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007). Damon did return for 2016’s Jason Bourne, but notably sat out The Bourne Legacy (2012), which featured Jeremy Renner in the lead.
If this project moves forward, it would mark the sixth installment in the main Bourne film series. Whispers of a revival first surfaced in 2023, with Berger’s name attached, though Damon’s involvement wasn’t initially guaranteed. With a decade having passed since the last proper entry starring Damon, the actor seems optimistic. He believes they “have a line of sight on how to do it” and are close to “cracking it.”
Damon also touched upon the unique challenge of the Bourne narrative compared to other spy franchises. Unlike James Bond, where each film is a standalone mission and the lead actor can change, Bourne’s story is deeply linear. This makes crafting a sequel that satisfies both new and old fans, offering both fresh material and familiar elements, a particularly tricky endeavor.
Despite his packed schedule – which includes starring in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming *The Odyssey*, his role in 2023’s blockbuster Oppenheimer, and other critically acclaimed films like Ford v Ferrari and Air – it’s clear that bringing Jason Bourne back to his roots is a priority for Matt Damon. Let’s hope they can indeed crack the code and deliver the Bourne movie we’ve all been waiting for!
