In response to a wave of player concerns, Dune: Awakening is making meaningful changes to its endgame structure—specifically to its PvP-heavy Deep Desert zone. Funcom’s creative director, Joel Bylos, announced today that certain parts of the Deep Desert will soon be designated as “Partial Warfare (PvE)” zones, allowing players to explore and engage with content without being forced into unwanted PvP encounters.
“Our goal is not to force PvE players to interact with a PvP system that they may have no interest in,” Bylos wrote in a developer update.
This change follows a recent AMA in which the Dune: Awakening team acknowledged that the game’s high-risk endgame was inadvertently alienating players who prefer solo play or non-competitive engagement. While Funcom maintains its commitment to the original vision of a competitive Deep Desert, it’s clear the studio is now focused on making the endgame more inclusive.
What’s Changing?
-
Partial PvE Zones: Some Deep Desert areas will allow players to harvest T6 resources and explore testing stations without the threat of PvP.
-
Core PvP Elements Remain: Key locations like Landsraad control points, shipwrecks, and the largest spice fields will still be flagged for PvP (labeled “War of Assassins”).
-
High-Risk Zones Stay: The deepest regions of the desert will continue to offer the highest rewards—at the cost of the greatest risk.
Bylos emphasized that Dune: Awakening still believes in the importance of guilds and group-based progression, warning that solo players may still find endgame content grindy. However, this move is aimed at making the game more accessible to a wider range of players, especially those intimidated by the PvP grind.
What About PvP Players?
The studio hasn’t forgotten its competitive audience. Bylos also confirmed that scout ornithopters will receive a nerf and that additional PvP-focused balance updates are on the way. Though no exact date was provided, these changes will roll out “soon.”
Community Reaction
Initial fan response has been largely positive, with many praising the update as a fair compromise. While hardcore PvP purists expressed concern over the “softening” of the Deep Desert, the broader community seems to welcome a more balanced and inclusive endgame.
In essence, Dune: Awakening is evolving—by listening. Whether you’re a survival MMO veteran or a solo explorer looking to carve your path in the sands of Arrakis, this update opens the door for a more tailored experience.
