BAFTA Cancels Game Trailer Over Sensitive Themes, Leaving Developer Heartbroken

Alyx Jones, the creative mind behind Silver Script Games, had her sights set on showcasing the trailer for her upcoming game, The Quiet Things, at the recent BAFTA awards. Unfortunately, just a night before the big reveal, she received a call that would change everything: the trailer was pulled due to concerns regarding its sensitive content.

In a heartfelt LinkedIn post, Jones expressed her disappointment, stating, “I had put in countless hours over the last two weeks, crafting this trailer amidst burnout, believing this was a once-in-a-lifetime chance for us.” The trailer was initially meant to display during the awards and also announce the game’s release date.

This wasn’t the first instance where the trailer faced scrutiny. It delves into heavy themes of childhood trauma, and while Jones thought she had addressed BAFTA’s previous concerns, the last-minute decision shocked her. “Having it pulled just hours before the event was devastating, especially after I revised the footage to eliminate elements that were flagged as potentially suggesting ‘weapons and violence,'” she added. “I even received thanks for the quality and speed of the edit!”

Despite her willingness to make additional changes, Jones claims her suggestions were ignored. BAFTA reportedly stated there wasn’t enough time to implement the necessary viewer warnings. In their defense, they later released a statement explaining, “We chose not to showcase a trailer for an unreleased game that may trigger some viewers, prioritizing the safety of our guests.” They affirmed their support for games tackling tough subjects but emphasized their focus on audience wellbeing during the event.

Fans can still catch a glimpse of the new trailer on YouTube. While it evokes themes of abuse and trauma through dialogue and abstract visuals, some feel it’s less jarring than other game trailers we’ve seen recently. Jones also pointed out the irony comparing her work to other controversial titles that have seen significant pushback but were still released widely.

In her post, she concluded by sharing the personal connection she has with The Quiet Things. “This game tells my story of trauma, survival, and the importance of giving a voice to survivors. It’s painful to revisit these experiences, especially in light of recent events.” The journey of bringing her story to life continues, and the gaming community will surely be rooting for her as she navigates these challenges.
