FF14’s Upcoming Changes: A Fresh Take on Open World Adventures
This week has me buzzing with excitement for Final Fantasy 14 in a way that I haven’t felt in ages. It’s my go-to MMO, and like any dedicated player, I’ve voiced my fair share of complaints over the years. But hey, it’s all love here; I just want FF14 to shine even brighter! Recently, I’ve been reflecting on how the game’s vast and gorgeous open world often feels like a missed opportunity.
With the upcoming expansion, Dawntrail, I couldn’t help but notice that while the graphics are stunning, there’s a certain emptiness to the experience. Square Enix recently announced during their fanfest that they’re planning to revamp the “Public Fields”—the zones where we embark on our main quests. This news is like music to my ears! Director Naoki Yoshida, affectionately known as Yoshi-P, promised to introduce more dynamic events and exciting content for players to immerse themselves in.
Right now, the daily player activity often feels lonely and underused, which has been a significant concern. Yoshi-P acknowledged this and mentioned, “We want to fix that, creating more exciting dynamic content.” Not only will the public fields get a facelift, but quests are also in for some “quality of life” upgrades, which is long overdue!
I’ve been vocal about how stale some aspects of the game have become, especially the FATEs (Fully Automated Events). They’ve stuck to a repetitive formula for years, lacking the innovation seen in other MMOs. Imagine having the thrill of participation like in World of Warcraft or Guild Wars 2, where world events are diverse and engaging!
For instance, instead of the usual “kill this monster” or “fetch this item” tasks, wouldn’t it be exciting to have FATEs that require unique activities? Imagine flying through rings or defending a tower against waves of enemies. Other games out there have proven that open world events can be a blast, with challenges that keep players on their toes.
Then there are the society quests—oh boy! These daily tasks can feel more like chores instead of an adventure. They often boil down to talking to NPCs and skimming through repetitive dialogue. I mean, who really wants to spend their precious gaming time on that? The combat-focused society quests could definitely use some spice. It would be fantastic if they incorporated more dynamic events or even required us to take down multiple foes instead of just one or two.
What truly excites me about the potential changes is the hope for more engaging content that actually gets players banding together organically. Currently, hunts seem to be one of the few activities that do this, but they rely on players coordinating through Discord. It’s great that we can work together, but it shouldn’t have to revolve around scheduling meticulously planned gatherings. There’s a reason why the new exploration zone, Occult Crescent, made the game “feel like an MMO again.”
As we await more details from the upcoming Berlin fanfest, my fingers are crossed for a bustling, vibrant open world filled with dynamic events and challenging boss fights. I’m looking forward to experiencing these enhancements in the very areas we explore in the main storyline, rather than in separate instances released long after the expansion’s launch. If Square Enix can pull this off, we might just see a revival of the incredible adventures that make FF14 such a beloved title!
