Unveiling Stranger Than Heaven: A Journey Through Time and Crime
Big news, gamers! RGG Studio has just dropped some exciting details about their upcoming game, Stranger Than Heaven. Initially teased at The Game Awards in 2024 under the codename Project Century, this title has finally revealed its identity. In collaboration with Xbox, the studio showcased a 30-minute dive into the game, loaded with fresh gameplay footage that’s bound to get you hyped.
So what’s the scoop? Well, this isn’t your typical Yakuza adventure. Stranger Than Heaven spans an incredible half-century journey. Our main character, Makoto Daito, kicks off his adventure in 1915. After losing his parents, he sneaks onto a ship headed for Japan, hoping for a new start. But things take a wild turn when he encounters Orpheus, a sharp-witted smuggler portrayed by none other than Snoop Dogg! Naturally, Makoto gets pulled into a criminal world, leveraging his Japanese skills to climb the social ladder.
As the narrative unfolds, you’ll witness the world transform along with Makoto. Depending on his life choices and aspirations, he’ll hop between cities, ensuring a dynamic gameplay experience. With each era, new mini-games pop up, making sure there’s never a dull moment. Plus, the environment is rich and layered—there are businesses to explore and a shady criminal underbelly to navigate.
When it comes to gameplay, RGG Studio is setting itself apart from the Yakuza series. The combat looks much more grounded yet intricate. Players will have specific controls tied to different body parts; for example, to throw a punch, you’ll hit the right bumper, and for a kick, the left trigger. This system encourages strategy rather than mindless button-mashing. The combat scenes look gritty and realistic, with epic animations that show Makoto tackling foes down staircases in a way that’s both brutal and visually captivating.
Weapons will also play a significant role in your journey, with plenty of melee options to find, buy, and upgrade. There are even hints at firearm usage, as we see Makoto practicing with a gun in the showcase—though it’s still a mystery how much they’ll feature during fights.
But it’s not all about the brawls! In a unique twist, Makoto will collect sounds from his environment, whether it’s the chirping of birds or the clashing of weapons. These sound bits can be mixed into original songs, adding an artistic flair to his life as he manages bands and puts on shows. The game also boasts a stellar cast, featuring artists like Tori Kelly, who’s contributed an original theme song.
Mark your calendars, because Stranger Than Heaven is set to launch in winter 2026 on Xbox Series X and S, PS5, and PC. And for Xbox Game Pass users, you’ll be able to dive into this adventure on day one!
