A Trip Down Memory Lane: PC Gaming Highlights from the ’90s to Today

Welcome to a nostalgic journey through the pages of PC gaming history! As we step into May, let’s reminisce about some iconic moments in PC Gamer magazine from 1996, 2006, and 2016. Each issue has its unique highlights and reflects the evolution of gaming over the decades.

Flashback to May 1996: The cover story revolved around the “Future of Gaming,” featuring articles like “Playing It On the Line” by Steve Poole and “Virtually Real” by T. Liam McDonald. Back then, virtual reality was the buzzword, and while its initial hype faded, it made a comeback years later. Online gaming, however, was clearly on the rise—something that turned out to be quite prophetic. The issue also previewed Prey and reviewed Wing Commander 4, while the CD included the shareware version of the much-loved Duke Nukem 3D.

Fast forward to May 2006: Battlefield 2142 graced the cover, promising intense gameplay 136 years into the future, with massive mechs dominating the battlefield. The excitement after the massive success of Battlefield 1942 was palpable, and although it scored a solid 86%, it didn’t quite create the same buzz as its predecessor. This issue also included an exclusive review of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion and a preview of Half-Life 2 Episode 1, keeping gamers on the edge of their seats for what was to come.

Jumping to May 2016: The spotlight was on Total War: Warhammer, with Jake Tucker writing about how “War has changed.” It was a time when VR was finally stepping out of the shadows, having been a hot topic since the ’90s. Unfortunately, the reality didn’t quite live up to the expectations set years earlier, but it was still a thrilling time in gaming. The issue featured coverage of the Oculus Rift launch and reviews for popular titles like Stardew Valley and The Division.

As we dig deeper into these old issues, we also see some interesting tidbits from the gaming world. In May 1996, 3D graphics were making major strides, and Microsoft rolled out Direct3D for Windows 95. Fast forward ten years, and Gabe Newell was already teasing us about the potential for Half-Life 3 while comic artist Jim Lee joined the team at DC Online. By 2016, Epic’s Tim Sweeney was voicing concerns about Microsoft’s influence on PC gaming, a discussion that still resonates today.

What’s your favorite memory from these decades of gaming? Did you catch any of these issues back in the day? Let’s celebrate the evolution of our beloved pastime together!
