Mind Blown! MGS2’s Hidden Third-Person Camera Mode Discovered After 15 Years!
Hold onto your stealth gear, gamers! Just when you thought you knew every corner of the iconic Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, a massive secret has been unearthed that’s got the entire community buzzing. Imagine playing MGS2 with a proper, free-moving third-person camera – something fans have only dreamed of. Well, it turns out that dream was literally hiding in the game’s code for a whopping 15 years, just waiting to be found!
You might remember the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol 1 had a bit of a rocky start when it launched in 2023. Konami has been working hard to patch things up, with the latest big update bringing some much-needed improvements like massive texture upgrades for MGS3 and the ability to finally swap ‘accept’ and ‘cancel’ buttons in MGS1. The collection is in a much better place now, but dedicated fans always push for more!
That’s where incredible fan projects like MGSHDFix come in. These modders are constantly refining the games, squashing bugs, and adding those extra touches that make a huge difference. And guess what? The brilliant mind behind MGSHDFix, Afevis Solmunko, has stumbled upon a truly game-changing discovery deep within MGS2’s inner workings: a fully functional, true third-person camera mode!
Solmunko shared this incredible find online, complete with a video showing Raiden navigating the Big Shell with a camera that offers a whole new perspective. “Accidentally found third-person view in MGS2 Master Collection,” they wrote, confirming it will be integrated into MGSHDFix. The camera smartly switches to an overhead view in super-tight corridors to prevent clipping, but otherwise, it’s a free-roaming experience that MGS2 players have never officially had before.
The craziest part? This camera wasn’t some complex new mod. It was literally a single variable in the game’s code that needed changing. This feature, which gives players a similar experience to the more modern camera introduced in Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, has been dormant all this time.
So, why was it hidden? It turns out the developers of the HD Collection, Bluepoint, experimented with adding a true third-person camera to MGS2 way back in 2011. While they ultimately decided not to include it in the final release, they left all the code in there, conveniently labeled with “BP/Bluepoint” tags. Fast forward to today, and Solmunko has brought their shelved work to light!
Since it was never officially implemented, the camera might have a few glitches, but Solmunko is confident they can iron out the kinks without too much trouble. The plan is to include it in MGSHDFix very soon, possibly even by the coming weekend! Imagine being able to freely switch between the classic fixed camera and this new third-person view, just like in MGS3 – Solmunko is aiming for exactly that, using R3 or a custom keyboard shortcut. This is huge for Metal Gear fans and promises to inject fresh life into a beloved classic!
