Destiny 2 Bows Out: A Look Back at an Epic Journey
In a bittersweet turn of events, Bungie has announced that Destiny 2 is officially coming to a close, with its final live service update set to drop on June 9. After nearly ten years, ten expansions, and thirty seasons, it’s safe to say we’re witnessing the end of an incredible chapter in gaming history.
Adding to the heartbreak is the news that there won’t be an immediate sequel, Destiny 3, along with whispers of impending layoffs at the studio. In the wake of this major announcement, former developers and voice actors have stepped forward to share their heartfelt experiences from working on one of the most iconic franchises in gaming.
Joe Blackburn, who held the position of game director from 2020 to 2024, reflected on his emotional journey with the series, which started as a fan before he joined the Bungie team. He expressed his gratitude on social media, saying, “Working in this universe has been an honor I can never fully repay. Destiny 2 has shaped so many of my core memories, and I’m thankful for all the players who made the Tower feel alive every day.”
Similarly, Catarina Macedo, who was the production director during 2022-2024, shared her pride in being part of the Destiny community: “It’s been an incredible honor to contribute to something so special. I’m proud to have played even a small part in building this game.”
Joseph Cross, formerly the lead concept artist before moving on to work on Marathon, also chimed in with nostalgia, sharing early concept art of the Pike. “It was one of the first impactful pieces I worked on, and it felt amazing to be part of the journey,” he noted, tapping into the excitement that fans felt before the launch of Destiny 1.
Robert Brookes, a former senior narrative designer now working on Cyberpunk 2, highlighted a poignant moment for the community when the voice of Zavala, Lance Reddick, passed away in 2023. “When I logged in that day, I saw guardians from servers all over kneeling and saluting. It showed just how remarkable the Destiny community is. I hope that those who still have the spirit join in to say goodbye one last time,” he reflected.
In a puzzling decision last year, Bungie laid off several beloved composers, including Michael Salvatori. Nadia VanDriest, an audio designer, expressed her gratitude for having worked alongside such talented individuals, stating, “Bungie changed my life, and I’m forever thankful for the learning experience.”
Recognizing the hard work everyone put in, she mentioned, “We did our utmost to uphold the quality expectations even under tough conditions. Although my time at Bungie didn’t end the way I envisioned, I’m proud of what we accomplished with Destiny 2.”
Voice actor Todd Haberkorn, known for his role as the Drifter, sent a heartfelt shoutout to the community: “For every mote you banked and all the Vex Milk you poured, here’s a toast to you all!” He appreciated the unique experience of being part of such a monumental project and cherished all the stories shared with him by fans globally.
Brian Villalobos, who portrayed Lodi in the now-canceled Edge of Fate update, also shared a touching video about his role. “Destiny was a monumental part of my life long before I joined. I was thrilled to receive the offer to be part of this universe, and I’ll always hold Lodi dear to my heart,” he expressed.
As Destiny 2 prepares to close its doors, the future for the game and its creators appears uncertain. Yet, the mix of gratitude, sadness, and frustration surrounding its conclusion resonates deeply with both developers and players alike. It’s a moment to reflect on the legacy of Destiny 2 and the memorable experiences it has given to countless fans over the years.
