Elias Toufexis on Gamer Outrage: “Life is Too Short for Hate”

Elias Toufexis, known for voicing Adam Jensen in the iconic Deus Ex series, recently had a candid chat about the negative vibes floating around the gaming community, particularly during his interview at GDC. He expressed his frustrations over the online rage that seems to pop up around game releases. “I was working on Marathon yesterday and found myself getting dragged into social media debates. I had to remind myself to step back,” he shared.

While he’s not one to shy away from sharing his opinions, Toufexis is disheartened by a specific type of backlash he often sees. He recalled a comment from a user hoping for Bungie’s failure due to their views on social issues. “I’m working with a diverse team, and I just don’t get where this negativity is coming from,” he said, emphasizing the absurdity of such claims.

Toufexis acknowledges that critique is an essential part of the gaming industry, and he’s totally open to it. However, he believes some of the online reactions go way overboard. “When Bungie decided to focus on Marathon instead of Destiny 2, I get why some fans were upset. But if you’re not interested in it, just don’t play it,” he advised. “Voting with your wallet is perfectly fine.”

The actor’s main concern is about those who dedicate hours to spreading outrage online. “Life is too short for that kind of negativity. Why spend all your time tweeting memes and hating on something? It just doesn’t make sense,” he added.

Reflecting on his past experiences with backlash from titles like Starfield and Star Trek: Discovery, he mentioned how the trolling often comes with political undertones. “It gets boring, honestly. People just want to hate for the sake of it, and that’s pretty sad,” he remarked. He humorously pointed out the irony of criticism aimed at Star Trek, a series known for its political commentary since day one.

On a brighter note, Toufexis feels like the tide may be shifting. He recently observed a trend where positive comments are starting to outweigh the negativity. “I saw a great review today that had mostly positive feedback, which is a nice change. It seems like more people are willing to speak up against the haters, and that’s something to celebrate,” he concluded, hoping this wave of positivity continues in the gaming community.
