Intel’s Upcoming Nova Lake Chip: A Gamer’s Dream or Edge Computing Dilemma?

Intel is currently basking in the glory of its recent successes with the Panther Lake and Arrow Lake Refresh processors, making any buzz about the anticipated Nova Lake chips fascinating for gamers. Rumors suggest that Team Blue is gearing up to launch a mobile chip that boasts 100% E-cores accompanied by a powerful integrated GPU.

While details are still scarce, a post from the Golden Pig Upgrade Pack on Weibo hints at a tantalizing prospect: this new processor is rumored to feature eight E-cores alongside a robust 12 Xe-core GPU. This setup could potentially handle a lot of games at 1080p, providing a smooth frame rate. Given how surprisingly capable the current E-cores are in Arrow Lake, one can only imagine the improvements in this next generation.

However, there’s a bit of a catch. The leaks indicate that this chip is destined for edge computing applications rather than gaming. Unlike Nvidia, which has a broad definition of ‘edge’ that includes everything except AI and data centers, Intel’s focus is more specific. They classify edge computing as tasks performed right where the data is generated, such as in robotic systems or self-driving technologies.

During a visit to Intel last year, I had the chance to chat with a development engineer about how Panther Lake’s NPU could be deployed in AI edge applications. They highlighted that while this chip is effective in low-power scenarios, anything more demanding would still need a dedicated GPU. We both agreed that the dream scenario would be a chip with a low-power CPU and a powerful integrated GPU.

Given Panther Lake’s outstanding iGPU, fingers crossed that Nova Lake follows suit. It’s a tantalizing thought that such a chip could be revolutionary for handheld gaming devices. Unfortunately, it looks like this dream might remain just that due to its intended use in edge computing. Although, who knows? Maybe a daring company will surprise us by creating an experimental handheld with this chip.

But there’s another hiccup: the current “RAMpocalypse” scenario could dash any hopes for affordable handhelds. The cost of chips in the edge market is already quite high, and combining this unique and pricier processor with the skyrocketing prices of DRAM could make such a handheld device prohibitively expensive. It feels like we can never catch a break when it comes to cool new tech, doesn’t it?
