Marathon’s New PvE Mode: A Game Changer for Bungie Fans
After dealing with some pesky server issues, I’ve finally dived into Marathon’s Season 2 update, and let me tell you, it’s everything I hoped for and more! The new nighttime Dire Marsh map is absolutely stunning. The atmosphere is so dark that you can barely see a few feet in front of you without a torch or some of the new gadgets. It’s eerie, with monsters and ghosts lurking around every corner, and those toxic plants? They seem to whisper, adding to the spine-chilling vibe!
While I thought the new map, the Sentinel character, and the fresh arsenal of weapons would steal the spotlight, I’ve found the most enjoyment in the experimental Sponsored Survival mode. Bungie has mentioned that they’re exploring various “PvP, PvE, and PvP-lite experiences,” and this mode is the first taste of that journey. Just a heads up, it’s only available for a short period – from June 2 to June 9, which coincides with a free play period. Perfect timing for those who are curious and want to give it a shot!
In this mode, you start off exploring Night Marsh with only one team of players, facing off against the UESC bots. It’s a much more relaxed vibe, but trust me, those bots are no joke, and the atmosphere can be quite intense. You’ll have the chance to tackle events that you might have missed out on, all while scoping out the best loot without the usual chaos.
However, as time goes on, you’ll find solo Rook players joining in. Since they’re starting with nothing while you have a head start, the stakes are low, but they’ll still be after that loot. Plus, there’s only one exit to escape through! My encounters with Rooks have varied; sometimes they were friendly, and other times, well, let’s just say it got a bit heated!
This mode essentially feels like a PvE experience but keeps the tension and excitement of PvP alive. After all the buzz about Marathon being heavily focused on PvP, this experimental mode is a breath of fresh air for those craving a PvE playstyle. Personally, I think Bungie should make this a permanent feature and expand it across the other maps once its test phase is over. I’m definitely going to miss it when it’s gone!
I’m eagerly awaiting the full PvE mode that’s set to arrive towards the end of Season 2. With the nighttime Dire Marsh, Outpost, and Cryo Archive already showcasing Bungie’s talent for crafting immersive PvE activities within a PvP framework, I can’t help but wonder what it will be like without the threat of other players. Will it be more fun? Boring? I’m all in for the adventure and ready for whatever Bungie has in store!
