Hellraiser: Revival – A Gruesome Game That Outshines the Film

It seems like just yesterday I thought horror movies weren’t really my thing. But, guess what? Over the past few years, I’ve found myself diving headfirst into the chilling world of horror flicks. What started as a casual interest in thrillers and horror comedies has blossomed into a full-blown obsession with the genre. I now find myself enjoying everything from campy classics to psychologically thrilling films. Seriously, Possession and The Thing are among my all-time favorites, and I can’t believe I waited so long to check out The Blob!

But let’s get one thing straight: the Hellraiser movie? Not great. While the special effects and Cenobite designs are undeniably creepy and impressive, the dialogue is a total slog. Roger Ebert had some harsh words for it back in the day, calling it a “bankruptcy of imagination,” and I can’t disagree. Thankfully, the gaming world seems to have taken a different route.

Enter Hellraiser: Revival from Saber Interactive, a single-player experience that’s already proving to be more enjoyable than the film the moment you grab that shotgun. I recently got my hands on the game for about 40 minutes and let me tell you—it delivers a wild ride filled with gruesome thrills.

The level I explored was set in a cult’s fetish club, complete with BDSM flyers and some rather bizarre paraphernalia. Picture this: cultists dressed in wild kinks that could double as armor. I had a blast wielding a gigantic machete, aptly named the Jagged Messer, which is literally described as “perfect for disembowelment.” Talk about a creative twist!

One cultist kept me on my toes with shotgun blasts, but I quickly adapted. Using the iconic Lament Configuration puzzle box from the franchise, I summoned fire essence to unleash a fiery blast, turning the tables on my enemies. The gameplay bears some resemblance to classics like BioShock, with well-crafted environments, collectible audio diaries, and light puzzles that keep things interesting. However, Hellraiser doesn’t shy away from its hornier side, making it stand out with cheeky references and a whole lot of adult humor.

After battling through the cultists, I found myself teleported to the hell dimension, navigating through twisted corridors and solving spatial puzzles to reach the cursed cube. The highlight? A hilarious button prompt that read, “Press F to Increase Suffering.” Honestly, what more could you want from a horror game?

Described as “survival horror action,” Hellraiser: Revival strikes a balance between horror and action similar to Resident Evil. You’ll find your ammo running low, which means you’ll need to get creative—whether it’s using the Lament Configuration to dispatch foes or sneaking up behind them for a stealth kill. The game has a gritty feel reminiscent of 2000s horror titles, though its outrageous themes may land it closer to The Darkness.

While it might not deliver true scares for everyone, it certainly offers plenty of moments that make you think, “Wow, that’s pretty messed up!” Plus, the gameplay is intense enough to keep you entertained, reminding me of those classic ’80s slasher flicks. I’m not ready to crown it a cult classic just yet, but with moments like using a bear trap to take out a cultist who shouted, “I’m gonna nail him from cover!” I’d say it has potential.

So, whether you’re a horror fan or looking for a wild gaming experience, Hellraiser: Revival is definitely worth checking out. It’s a gruesome adventure that seems set to carve its own niche in the horror genre!
