Sneak Peek into Steam Frame: Valve’s Upcoming VR Headset Tutorial Leaked

Valve is at it again! After the Steam Controller made quite the splash and the Steam Machine generated its fair share of buzz, all eyes are on their upcoming VR headset, the Steam Frame. While we’re still waiting for a solid release date, a tantalizing snippet of the headset’s setup process has leaked on Reddit, and it’ll definitely pique your interest!

Over on the Steam Frame Subreddit, an eager user showcased what seems to be the initial moments of the headset’s software, aptly titled “Welcome to Steam Frame.” The quick video gives us a glimpse into how to navigate the controllers, toggle the user interface, and link the headset to your PC. Although the user credited LabeVR for the info, they didn’t specify the exact source of this juicy leak.

Interestingly, the footage was captured using the Valve Index, rather than the Steam Frame itself, which is why you see that colorful pass-through effect. In contrast, the Steam Frame offers a simpler black-and-white pass-through, which doesn’t quite measure up to the likes of Meta Quest 3 or Pico 4 Ultra in augmented reality features. But let’s not forget, this headset is primarily built for gaming, and that’s where its strengths lie!

Once you power up the Steam Frame, the Welcome Tour displays an overlay of your Steam Library, featuring VR games at the forefront. The whole experience feels streamlined and efficient. You simply turn on the headset, connect it to your PC, and dive into your games. This ease of access is one of the key selling points of the Steam Frame. It comes with a USB Type-A dongle that wirelessly links the headset to your PC, ensuring smooth data transmission through a dedicated antenna within the device.

The video feed for VR gaming can be pretty demanding, but Valve has implemented a clever solution: foveated streaming. Thanks to the built-in eye tracking technology, the headset can boost the visual quality of what you’re directly staring at while dialing back the fidelity of the peripheral view. This software testing is an exciting sign that we might not be too far from the Steam Frame’s launch, especially since Valve recently confirmed that both the Steam Machine and Steam Frame are set for release this summer.

While we’re still left in the dark about the number of units, pricing, and a specific launch date, summer is slipping away, and an official reveal is just around the corner. Stay tuned for more updates, gamers!
