Steam Controller Demand Soars: Brace Yourself for a 2027 Wait!
Valve is currently facing a massive challenge in keeping up with the overwhelming demand for its Steam Controller. This innovative gamepad, featuring trackpads for enhanced gameplay, flew off the shelves shortly after its launch in early May. Since then, Valve has set up a reservation system reminiscent of what they used for the Steam Deck, but the response has been so intense that they’ve had to improve the system to set realistic expectations for potential buyers.
In a recent update, Valve acknowledged the situation, stating, “When we launched the Steam Controller last month, we quickly realized that the initial demand was beyond what we anticipated.” They emphasized that they have no intention of halting production of the Steam Controller. However, they are mindful of the current demand levels compared to their production capacity for the rest of the year, and they want to keep everyone informed about when they might actually receive their orders.
So, here’s the deal: if you haven’t already jumped into the reservation queue, you might be waiting until 2027 to get your hands on a Steam Controller. A colleague from the U.S. signed up recently and was given an estimated availability of 2027, and it’s a similar situation for others, including those in Australia.
Valve has updated the reservation page to provide three potential shipping windows: “by September 2026,” “by December 2026,” and “in 2027,” with more specific details about the latter to be revealed later. If you’re already in the queue, you can check back and see which time frame your order falls into.
This raises an interesting question: how many people in the queue are genuinely committed to buying the Steam Controller? It’s worth noting that you can reserve your place without putting down any money, so there’s little risk in signing up even if you’re not entirely sure about the purchase. Given the high demand, it makes sense to secure your spot now just in case you change your mind later. After all, what if the Steam Machine turns out to be a game-changer, making the Steam Controller a must-have accessory?
Once your turn arrives, you’ll have a window of 72 hours to finalize your purchase before losing your spot in line. With the Steam Machine and Steam Frame on the horizon, it wouldn’t be surprising if we see a similar frenzy when they launch. Stay tuned for more updates!
