Path of Exile 2’s Holiday Woes: Exploits Turn Christmas into Chaos

Path of Exile 2 recently hit a snag during its latest season when a sneaky trick emerged that allowed players to rake in massive amounts of loot, turning them into in-game millionaires in no time. This situation escalated so quickly that the developers at Grinding Gear Games had to pause their holiday celebrations to address the issue.

This season introduced the “temple” feature, which was supposed to let players create their own dungeons by connecting different rooms on a grid. While initially intended for battling new bosses and uncovering exclusive loot, players soon realized they could exploit the system to generate an overwhelming amount of rewards.

By locking a character in the campaign and repeatedly resetting levels, players discovered they could transform their temple into a goldmine. By linking specific rooms together, they could keep their loot intact after running the dungeon, ensuring they received a treasure trove of items far exceeding what the game normally allows.

Mark Roberts, the co-director of PoE 2, expressed his frustrations in a recent interview, stating that the need for emergency patches to resolve these exploits “ruined Christmas” for him. He pointed out that the developers have significantly ramped up their tracking of item drops in response to the temple chaos.

During the interview, another developer highlighted just how players were manipulating the temple system, prompting Roberts to react with disbelief. Just hours later, a patch was released to tackle another exploit linked to the temple, which, while less severe than the first, still posed a threat to the game’s economy.

“I’ve lost all sympathy for that bloody temple and everyone running it,” Roberts joked, acknowledging the trauma this situation has caused. Typically, developers refrain from making major changes a few weeks into a new season, but the temple exploits were too significant to overlook.

Though PoE 2 is in its early access phase, players approach it with the same expectations as the original game, wanting developers to keep the gameplay balanced and enjoyable. The main aim for players is to amass in-game wealth to enhance their builds, although those who prefer a solo experience can opt for the self-found mode, which limits multiplayer interactions.

It’ll be interesting to see if this incident leads Grinding Gear Games to rethink the timing of future leagues, particularly around the holidays. Players are always on the lookout for ways to exploit systems, and they certainly won’t take a break just because the developers are off for the holidays. It seems like someone always needs to be on standby to tackle these powerful exploits as they arise.
