Luna Abyss Team Faces Layoffs Just Weeks After Launch
It’s a bittersweet moment for fans of the unique shooter Luna Abyss, as the team behind the game has unfortunately faced layoffs less than a month after its release. Despite some positive buzz around the game, the reality of the gaming industry has struck hard.
On June 16, Kwalee Labs CEO Hollie Emery announced on LinkedIn that the entire development team has been made redundant, a decision she described as “completely outside of our control.” In her post, she expressed gratitude for the support received and mentioned that the nine developers are now available for new opportunities. She encouraged anyone connected to potential employers to reach out directly to help the team find new gigs.
For those who might not be in the loop, Luna Abyss is a fascinating blend of bullet hell mechanics and first-person shooting, offering players a thrilling experience filled with intense action and dodging challenges. Wes Fenlon, a senior editor, previously praised the game for its innovation, stating it proves that the bullet hell genre deserves more attention in the FPS world.
However, despite critical acclaim, Luna Abyss struggled to attract a substantial player base, with its peak concurrent player count reaching just 317 on Steam, and currently hovering around 43. It’s a tough reminder that even great games can face uphill battles in terms of sales and visibility, especially in niche genres.
With the game launched on May 21, the team didn’t get much time to build traction before the unfortunate news of layoffs hit. This situation serves as a stark reminder that the gaming industry is a rollercoaster, and success in creativity doesn’t always equate to financial stability.
