Epic Games CEO Critiques Steam’s Market Approach: Opportunities Missed

Steam might be ruling the roost when it comes to PC gaming, but it isn’t exactly the complete package for every gamer out there. Tim Sweeney, the head honcho at Epic Games, has some thoughts on this. He feels that Valve is leaving a lot on the table by not collaborating with some of the biggest names in the industry.

In a recent chat, Sweeney pointed out that while Steam is popular, it doesn’t cater to a significant chunk of the gaming community. “They have a nice thing going on, but how much of the PC audience are they truly reaching?” he questioned. He elaborated that Steam misses out on a ton of big titles like Fortnite, Genshin Impact, and various Riot Games, which are absent from their platform.

It’s no secret that Valve’s approach limits access to major gaming communities. For instance, the rivalry with Riot Games, which started with League of Legends as a spin-off from DotA, means Steam and Riot aren’t ever likely to coexist peacefully. Plus, with Fortnite launching around the same time as the Epic Games Store emerged, it’s unlikely we’ll see that title on Steam either. The separation seems almost inevitable.

Sweeney believes that Valve is turning away a wealth of opportunities. He suggested that if Steam adopted a more progressive, open-minded approach, akin to what Epic and Microsoft are doing, they could prosper even more. He highlighted how Microsoft Store offers a competitive 12% fee for developers, which is pretty attractive in the current market. Even Google is stepping up with better deals for developers, showing that the industry is evolving.

He envisions a “Team Open” scenario where Steam could be present across various platforms. “Imagine if you could access Steam on iPhones or Android devices and have a broader range of games,” he mused. It’s an interesting thought, isn’t it?

Valve has received its fair share of criticism over its market strategies, which have even caused ripples in legal battles, particularly with Epic’s fight against Apple regarding unfair practices. There have also been rumors of Valve being unhappy with publishers who price their games lower on other platforms during sales.

Meanwhile, Gabe Newell, the billionaire behind Valve, isn’t letting the pressure get to him. He’s recently splashed out $70 (approx. Rs 19,460) million on a new mansion, adding to his impressive $500 (approx. Rs 139,000) million yacht, all while navigating the complexities of the gaming market.
