Valve Hints at Affordable Steam Machines but Cautions on Price Drops
Valve, the company behind the iconic Steam platform, has recently shared some thoughts on making their Steam Machine more budget-friendly. However, don’t get your hopes up just yet; they also hinted that any potential price cuts are far off in the future.
In a chat with gaming insiders, engineers Pierre-Loup Griffais and Yazan Aldehayyat discussed the challenges of pricing the Steam Machine, which currently sits at a hefty $1,049 (approx. Rs 291,620). Their comments come amid ongoing global shortages of essential components like RAM, which have driven up prices across the gaming landscape.
When asked about the possibility of lowering the Steam Machine’s price, Griffais mentioned that keeping the hardware expensive isn’t their goal. “It’s meant to connect players with their games, not to make money off them,” he said, emphasizing that they prefer it to be as affordable as possible.
While this news might excite those looking forward to owning a Steam Machine, the reality remains disheartening. Industry experts, including Micron’s CEO, have projected that the current shortages—especially concerning AI-driven RAM—could persist until at least 2027. This means gamers may have a long wait ahead before seeing any significant price reductions.
Aldehayyat echoed Griffais’ sentiments, stating, “We’d love to make it cheaper and more accessible, but I can’t promise that will happen anytime soon.” Both engineers agree that the market’s future doesn’t look promising for price drops.
Valve introduced the Steam Machine back in November 2025, aiming to create a device that blurs the lines between PC and console gaming. However, they quickly warned consumers about the steep pricing, with the 512GB version costing $1,049 (approx. Rs 291,620), while the 2TB model goes for $1,349 (approx. Rs 375,020) or $1,428 (approx. Rs 396,980) when bundled with a Steam Controller.
For those intrigued by what the Steam Machine has to offer, it’s a waiting game. Keep your fingers crossed, but don’t hold your breath for a price cut anytime soon!
