Valve’s Steam Machine Launch Plagued by Scalpers, Prices Skyrocket!

Alright, gamers, buckle up because we’ve got some frustrating news from the world of Steam Machines. Valve finally opened up reservations for their new gaming hardware, and almost immediately, the notorious scalpers swooped in, flooding eBay with listings at exorbitant prices – some more than double the original retail cost!

For those who’ve been keeping an eye on Valve (the geniuses behind Half-Life and the Steam platform), you know they’ve been trying a unique approach for the Steam Machine launch. They opted for a randomized reservation system, allowing eager players to sign up for a chance to buy one of the limited devices. The idea was to make it “less frustrating and more fair” than a typical mad dash for pre-orders, getting these cool PC-and-console hybrids into actual players’ hands without the usual headaches.

Users who signed up recently started receiving emails, letting them know if they made it into the coveted “reservation queue” or the dreaded “waitlist.” Given the limited stock of these already pricey machines – the 512GB model without a controller starts at a hefty $1,049 (approx. Rs 291,620) – it was always going to be a tough get. But it seems even Valve’s clever system couldn’t completely deter the scalpers.

In the hours since those notification emails went out, eBay has been swamped with Steam Machine reservation listings. We’re talking prices ranging from a few hundred dollars over retail to downright outrageous figures. For example, a 512GB model with a controller, which Valve lists at $1,128 (approx. Rs 313,580), was snapped up for $1,500 (approx. Rs 417,000) – that’s nearly a $400 (approx. Rs 111,200) markup!

It gets worse. A 2TB Steam Machine with a controller, retailing for $1,428 (approx. Rs 396,980), reportedly sold for a whopping $2,100 (approx. Rs 583,800), adding a cool $670 (approx. Rs 186,260) to the original price. And for the ultimate shocker, a 2TB model without a controller, typically priced at $1,349 (approx. Rs 375,020), went for an unbelievable $2,899 (approx. Rs 805,920) – more than double Valve’s asking price! And let’s not forget, you’d probably have to factor in extra shipping costs on top of these inflated figures.

Honestly, this isn’t entirely surprising, especially when it comes to a highly anticipated Valve release. We saw a similar situation just last month with the Steam Controller pre-orders. Originally priced at $99 (approx. Rs 27,520), some of those controllers were being flipped online for over $250 (approx. Rs 69,500). It’s a recurring headache for the gaming community.

So, while genuine gamers are left in limbo, unsure when (or if) Valve will notify them that it’s their turn to purchase a Steam Machine at its standard price, the scalpers are busy making a quick buck. It’s a frustrating reality, but Valve is working hard to get more of these unique devices into players’ hands. For now, it seems patience (and a strong will to resist inflated prices) is key!

Note: PKR figures are approximate, based on a rate of Rs 278.00 per USD. Exchange rates fluctuate — please check the latest dollar rate for exact pricing.
