Wallpaper Engine Axed from Steam Due to Malware Fiasco

Wallpaper Engine, a beloved desktop wallpaper tool on Steam, has been a go-to choice for gamers and users for nearly a decade. However, it seems the application has recently hit a major snag. It has come to light that some malicious entities managed to hijack the application’s wallpaper system. This unfortunate turn of events allowed these bad actors to infect users’ computers with malware while the program operated in the background.

In light of these serious security concerns, the developers have made the tough decision to permanently remove Wallpaper Engine from the Steam platform. They’re urging users to back up their favorite wallpapers before the application is taken down on Monday, July 6. Interestingly, the removal will only impact around 0.5% of all wallpapers, with the actual number of affected users being even lower.

The developers’ official statement highlights a crucial issue: “Executable files can’t be consistently secured through automated systems. There will always be holes that malicious users can exploit. Recently, we’ve observed attempts to leverage this outdated feature to distribute malware. Ultimately, we can no longer justify keeping a feature that allows the easy sharing of random .exe files on our platform.”

This malware issue isn’t new; a report from Securlist revealed that malware had been infiltrating Wallpaper Engine as far back as late 2025. The risks were serious, with reports of accounts being hijacked, hard drives being compromised, hidden crypto miners being installed, and even ransomware encrypting users’ vital data.

Wallpaper Engine isn’t alone in facing such dire consequences; several other games have also been removed from Steam for similar malware-related issues. The situation has escalated to the point where even the FBI is now investigating multiple infected titles on Steam. It’s a stark reminder of the importance of digital security in our gaming experiences.
