Sonic Pico Park: A New Spin on Co-op Fun with Sega’s Blue Blur

Get ready, Sonic fans! With 2026 marking Sonic the Hedgehog’s 35th birthday, Sega has something truly exciting in store: Sonic Pico Park. This quirky co-op puzzle platformer puts our favorite blue hedgehog in the capable hands of talented indie developers. It’s not just a game; it’s a testament to how the gaming world is changing, and it’s crucial for Sonic’s growth and longevity.

Having had a chance to try out Sonic Pico Park, I can say it’s a delightful mix of joy and chaos—pretty much what you’d expect from an indie couch co-op experience. You and your friends control a bunch of charming blocky characters, working together to navigate through levels designed to test your friendship. And guess what? Sonic’s signature moves are woven into the gameplay, adding a fresh twist!

Picture this: you can spin dash through cracked walls, race through loops, and bounce off springs—all while solving puzzles. Collecting rings works just like classic Sonic; they act as a safety net against a single hit, so you’ll need to think carefully about who grabs them to survive the traps that await.

In certain puzzles, you might need to build a wall for someone to spin dash up or have Tails fly the whole team over gaps. The thrill lies in figuring out these challenges, so I won’t spoil too much. If you’ve dabbled in any of the Pico Park titles, you’ll have a sense of what’s coming, but Tecopark aims to attract a whole new crowd with this collaboration.

Pico Park has already made waves, selling around 8 million copies. Creator Shunsuke “Teco” Miyake wanted to take things further, and in 2021, he established a company to expand the franchise. Producer Shintaro Shimazu shared that they aimed to engage both casual and hardcore gamers. “We felt it was time to collaborate with established IPs,” he said, and with Miyake’s Sega background, Sonic was the perfect fit. They were pleasantly surprised when Sega was all in on the idea!

For Takashi Iizuka, head of Sonic Team, the collaboration was a bit of a shocker at first. “Is this gonna be a Sonic game?” he wondered. However, past experiences with indie developers like the team behind Sonic Mania gave him confidence. Although creating an eight-player co-op game was new territory, Iizuka encouraged unique abilities for the Sonic characters, even if it broke some traditional design elements of Pico Park.

Sega has embraced indie developers, allowing them to experiment with its iconic characters, leading to some fantastic outcomes. Iizuka mentioned that while creating major titles demands significant resources, indie teams can quickly turn their ideas into playable experiences. This dynamic is something larger studios can learn from, and Iizuka believes it’s a trend that should be observed by the gaming industry as a whole.

Partnering with passionate indie studios allows companies like Sega to connect with the very creators who were inspired by their characters. Shimazu himself grew up wanting to play Sega games and has witnessed Sonic’s evolution into a multimedia superstar, much like many of us. “Sonic’s presence in movies and various media has helped keep him alive,” he noted, reflecting on Sonic’s journey over the years.

It’s hard to believe that just ten years ago, Sonic was facing some tough decisions. However, Iizuka credits the fans for keeping the spirit alive and ensuring Sega stays on the right track. He recalled how fans spoke up about the Sonic movie design, and the team listened, leading to a better final product. “We’ve been listening to fans for 35 years, and we want to continue delivering what they love,” he emphasized.

So gear up for Sonic Pico Park, where fun, friendship, and some friendly rivalry await. The future looks bright for our favorite hedgehog, and we can’t wait to see where his journey goes next!
