Creative Clash Clouds Supergirl’s Launch Ahead of Release

It looks like Supergirl’s journey to the big screen has been anything but smooth sailing! Fresh reports indicate that creative conflicts at DC Studios led to the testing of multiple cuts of the film just months before its premiere. The clash involved director Craig Gillespie and the studio, with both sides pushing for different visions of Milly Alcock’s superhero debut.

According to industry insiders, this behind-the-scenes drama comes as fans were already left disappointed by early reviews and box office predictions. Sources claim that test screenings for Supergirl revealed scores hovering around the low 70s, which is far from impressive. While some insiders suggested that the usual creative tension was at play, others hinted that the two parties were, in fact, “not creatively aligned.”

DC Studios reportedly became aware of potential issues with Supergirl shortly after filming wrapped up in May 2025, with concerns escalating after a lukewarm screening in December of that year. The studio felt the need to intervene and brought in writer Jeremy Slater, known for Mortal Kombat 2 and Moon Knight, to help craft a studio version of the film.

Throughout the later months of 2025 and early 2026, DC Studios conducted at least four test screenings, aiming to gauge audience reactions. Although some screenings returned mixed results, leading to two distinct cuts being developed — one by Gillespie and the other by the studio — the exact differences between them remain unclear. Rumors suggest that Gillespie’s version was about 11 minutes longer and provided more depth to Matthias Schoenaerts’ villain, Krem.

Ultimately, the studio’s cut edged out Gillespie’s by a narrow margin of just two points during testing, making it the version that hit theaters in late June. An anonymous filmmaker remarked that it’s not unusual for studios to conduct such tests, but it’s a sign they have strong opinions about the creative direction.

Another hot topic post-release has been the film’s soundtrack. Fans have been vocal about their opinions, particularly regarding the choice of a cover of Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle” during a critical moment in the film. Gillespie previously noted that it was Gunn who decided to feature that track, although there were discussions about using Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” instead during earlier screenings.

As Supergirl made its debut, riding high on the hopes of DC fans, early indicators suggest it may struggle at the box office. Analysts predict that Warner Bros. and DC Studios could be facing losses exceeding $100 (approx. Rs 27,800) million. IGN rated Supergirl a 6/10, noting that while Milly Alcock delivers a compelling performance as Kara Zor-El, her character seems lost in a narrative stitched together from various other superhero tales.

What’s next for the DCU? The next film on the roster is Clayface, set to release on October 23, 2026, followed by Gunn’s Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, which is slated for July 9, 2027. Stay tuned for more updates on the ever-evolving world of superhero cinema!
