The Great Luigi Mystery: 30 Years in the Making

If you were part of the gaming scene back in 1996, you probably heard the buzzing rumors about a certain green-clad plumber. Whispers in the schoolyard and snippets in magazines claimed that Luigi was hiding somewhere in Super Mario 64. Despite the hype, some of us were skeptical, including the folks at IGN, who decided to put their money where their mouth was and issued a $100 (approx. Rs 27,800) bounty for anyone who could prove Luigi’s existence in the game. Countless players took on the challenge, but no one could deliver proof. As the years rolled by, the mystery faded from memory—until a recent data breach reignited the search.

Fast forward to now, thanks to the infamous “Gigaleak,” we’ve uncovered evidence that might finally put the Luigi mystery to rest. For years, the legend persisted that Luigi was somehow secreted away in Mario 64, despite creator Shigeru Miyamoto confirming that memory limitations led to his exclusion. Yet, gamers were convinced there had to be something hidden in the game.

Tom Phillips, a lifelong Nintendo enthusiast and journalist, explained how players were captivated by whispers of secrets since Mario 64’s launch. “Back then, it was all about the myths you shared with friends, not something easily searchable online,” he recalls. The genesis of the Luigi rumor stemmed from a near-indecipherable sign at Peach’s castle that players believed read “L is Real 2401.” This sparked wild theories about how to find him—some even suggested collecting a staggering 2,401 stars to unlock him.

Super Mario 64 set the bar high for 3D platformers, making it a beloved title for countless gamers. Its sprawling world was filled with secrets, leading many to hold onto hope that Luigi was somewhere within its depths. Sadly, after scouring every inch of the game and collecting all 120 stars, players were left disappointed. Yoshi greeted them instead of Luigi. Though he eventually appeared in the Nintendo DS remake, many continued to believe he was in the original.

In an attempt to clear the air, Perry, who was then an editor at N64.com (later known as IGN), put out the infamous bounty, not realizing the frenzy it would cause. Emails flooded in from excited fans convinced they could prove Luigi’s presence. “I thought it would be a fun little article, but the emails just kept coming,” Perry admitted. Despite the mounting evidence against Luigi’s presence, the community’s hope remained unshaken.

Even after Nintendo officially stated that Luigi was just a playful joke, the legend of “L is Real” continued to thrive. This ongoing mystery became fodder for speculation, as fans tirelessly tried to unlock the plumber’s secret. It wasn’t until 2020 that the Gigaleak, a massive leak of Nintendo’s internal data, opened a new chapter in this story.

With the leak, a treasure trove of information emerged, including early builds of Super Mario 64. An anonymous developer, known as GlitchyPSI, delved into the data and spotted something groundbreaking: a texture associated with Luigi. After years of speculation, the evidence was finally there. Modders jumped in, piecing together Luigi’s character from the remnants found in the code. This was a quintessential moment for the gaming community, linking decades of myths to undeniable proof.

While the original bounty may have been settled in a roundabout way, it highlights the passionate community surrounding Mario and his adventures. To commemorate this journey, IGN donated the original bounty amount to AbleGamers, a charity supporting gamers with disabilities.

Looking ahead, it’s hard to imagine such mysteries lingering for long in an age where players can dissect game code almost immediately. Yet, the allure of Nintendo’s hidden treasures continues to captivate fans, reminding us of the magic behind gaming stories and the creativity of its designers. As we celebrate 30 years of Super Mario 64, the love for this iconic title—and its elusive brother—remains stronger than ever.
