Nintendo Switch Discontinuation Announced for Europe: A Farewell to a Classic
The beloved Nintendo Switch, which first hit the market nearly a decade ago, is gearing up for its farewell in Europe. As we approach 2027, the original model will officially be discontinued, marking the end of an era for many gamers.
Nintendo has shared an update on its official site indicating that the original Switch, as well as the Switch Lite and Switch OLED models, will be pulled from European retailers by mid-February 2027. This means no more new stock of these devices in stores across Europe after that date.
While details about the discontinuation in North America remain unclear, Nintendo’s decision to stop production in Europe seems driven by recent regulatory changes. The European Union has introduced a new rule mandating that console makers offer products with user-replaceable batteries. Making modifications to the original Switch to accommodate this requirement likely wouldn’t be cost-effective at this stage of its life cycle, prompting Nintendo to phase it out instead.
However, fans can look forward to the upcoming Switch 2 models, which are set to comply with Europe’s Right to Repair directive. These new consoles will feature replaceable batteries and are expected to be launched this summer. Although Nintendo has stated that these new models are quite similar to those already on the market, they caution that availability might vary across different European countries due to ongoing supply chain challenges.
In the current gaming landscape, where physical media is gradually fading, the Switch 2 stands out as one of the few remaining consoles that still supports disc-based games. Yet, Nintendo has shifted focus towards digital formats, particularly with its Game-Key Cards for third-party titles, which hasn’t sat well with some game preservation advocates.
As we prepare to bid farewell to the original Nintendo Switch in Europe, it’s a bittersweet moment for gamers who have enjoyed countless hours of fun on this innovative console. Here’s to the memories and the exciting future ahead with the Switch 2!
