Quake's Legacy: A Bitter Reflection
0
The recent 30th anniversary of Quake has sparked a fascinating and somewhat controversial discussion among the game's original developers. Sandy Petersen flat-out stated that despite Quake being a monumental achievement, it also "ruined" id Software by driving many talent away due to the intense workload. It was really surprising to see John Carmack, often the face of id, openly apologize for pushing the team too hard. This made me reflect on the nature of game development, especially in those early days where expectations were sky-high and the pressure to innovate was relentless.
What do you all think? Can we find a balance between ambition and team well-being in game development today?
