Bethesda has dropped a hefty new update for Fallout 76, kicking off Season 21 with the “Gone Fission” patch—an aquatic-themed overhaul that adds a full fishing system, gameplay refinements, and major combat balancing.
The centerpiece of the update is the all-new Casting Off questline, which takes players to Fisherman’s Rest in The Mire. There, players meet quirky new characters, including Captain Raymond Clark and his crab companion Linda-Lee. The quest grants players a Fishing Rod that unlocks immersive fishing mechanics, complete with upgradeable parts and bait types that affect the likelihood of reeling in rare or region-specific fish. Players can even use C.A.M.P. weather stations to manipulate weather for optimal fishing.
The new system also introduces Fish Bits, which can be consumed, cooked into meals for buffs, or fed to Linda-Lee for a random Legendary item. The update teases Local Legends and rotating monthly Axolotls to catch, encouraging exploration across Appalachia.
Season 21 introduces themed rewards and a Gold Bullion exchange for unused Season Tickets, while combat rebalance changes affect dozens of weapons. Notable changes include increased base damage, reduced AP costs, and improved ranged performance, especially for underused weapons like the Harpoon Gun and Gauss series.
Bethesda’s ongoing polish includes UI updates, perk tweaks, and accessibility features like faster travel and Quick Heal priorities. With “Gone Fission,” Fallout 76 proves it’s come a long way since launch—and it’s not slowing down anytime soon.
