Blizzard tried something new in Overwatch 2’s Stadium mode this week, and the community immediately said: “Nope.”
Less than 72 hours after launch, the devs have already rolled back the most unpopular part of the update—the removal of mirror matchups.
The idea was simple: add a MOBA-style draft where no two players could pick the same hero. Sounds strategic on paper, but in practice it just killed the fun. Stadium only has 21 heroes to choose from, so losing access to your main before you even get a turn felt terrible.
As one player on Reddit put it: “We have six supports. SIX. You can lose access to half your role before you even get a turn.”
The community reaction was instant and brutal. Social media lit up with posts, memes, and rants about how this system made the mode less exciting, especially since Stadium is supposed to be about experimenting with items and powers as a match goes on. Instead, the draft just locked people out of the heroes they wanted.
Blizzard clearly got the message. Game director Aaron Keller jumped on X to confirm mirror matchups are back:
“We’re grateful to everyone who tried it out and shared feedback. One of our goals is to make the game that you want to play… we’ll adapt and iterate as quickly as we can when something doesn’t land the way we want.”
So, the draft system itself isn’t gone, but now you can pick the same hero as someone else again. Which honestly feels like how it should’ve been in the first place.
To Blizzard’s credit, they’ve always said Stadium would be an experimental mode. Not every idea will be a win, but at least they pulled the plug fast this time instead of forcing players to suffer through a whole season.
The community might not love every experiment, but they definitely respect a quick reversal when something flops this hard.
