Silksong’s First Wave of Mods Are Making the Game Easier—Including the Return of a Hollow Knight Classic

Silksong2

Silksong has barely hit the ground running, but two familiar scenes are already unfolding: speedrunners tearing the game apart like it’s a lab project, and modders smoothing out its rough edges for anyone struggling with Hornet’s punishing journey.

On the modding front, the Silksong Nexus is already packed with uploads, and unsurprisingly, the most popular ones all share a theme—making the game easier. Sitting comfortably in the top slots is Always Have Compass Effect by Synthlight, a mod that feels like a reunion with an old friend from Hollow Knight.

Just like in the first game, Silksong requires you to dedicate one of your limited “tool” slots (the sequel’s take on charms) if you want the handy little map icon showing where you are. That means trading power for comfort. Synthlight’s mod flips the table and simply gives you the compass effect for free, no sacrifices required. The same creator has also dropped a mod that makes picking up currency easier by applying the “magnet” effect permanently. Both of these require the BepInEx Unity plugin to run.

For some players, this is a godsend. For others, it’s borderline heresy. Personally, I love friction in games—the little annoyances, the awkward challenges, the design quirks that stick in your brain. Silksong’s compass trade-off is one of those clever annoyances that force you to make tough choices, and I respect Team Cherry for sticking to it.

But hey, not everyone plays games to suffer, and these mods basically work like an unofficial difficulty slider. Don’t want to deal with Silksong’s brutality? You can browse Nexus and grab mods that reduce enemy damage, add fast travel, slap health bars on bosses, and more.

Speedrunners might be pushing the limits of Silksong’s mechanics, but modders are already pushing the limits of its accessibility. Whether you’re a purist who embraces the pain or a casual explorer who just wants a smoother ride, the community’s already got you covered.
