Next-Gen Xbox Launch in 2027 Is Not Set in Stone, Microsoft Says

🚨 Xbox Game Pass May 2025 Wave 1: Doom, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, and Savage Planet Headline a Packed Month

Microsoft’s plans for a next-generation Xbox release in 2027 are shaping up, but industry insiders warn that the launch isn’t fully locked in yet. According to a recent Windows Central report, the 2027 timeframe should be seen as a “best case scenario” rather than a confirmed date.

The speculation began after AMD CEO Lisa Su highlighted progress on a custom chip designed for Microsoft’s upcoming console. Speaking at AMD’s latest financial briefing, Su said the project is “progressing well to support a launch in 2027.” She also noted that Valve is preparing to release its AMD-powered Steam Machine early this year. (For context, the Xbox’s chip is a semi-custom SoC, meaning it integrates most of the console’s computing functions on a single circuit.)

Despite Su’s comments, Microsoft reportedly felt “a little taken off-guard” by the announcement. Sources indicate the company is still evaluating improvements to Windows 11, which will serve as the backbone for the next Xbox’s operating system. Essentially, the console can only launch in 2027 if the software is polished and ready to deliver a seamless experience.

This follows Microsoft’s confirmation of its partnership with AMD last year, building on a 2024 statement from Xbox president Sarah Bond about moving “full speed ahead” on next-gen hardware designed to deliver a major technological leap.

One of the standout features expected in the new console is cross-platform support. Players may be able to access games from multiple stores—including Steam and Epic Games Store—alongside Xbox’s own catalog. Epic’s store head, Steve Allison, confirmed in a Game File interview that Fortnite and other titles are expected on day one, pending Microsoft’s technical requirements.

Even if the next Xbox doesn’t arrive in 2027, it could still beat the PlayStation 6 to market. Analysts suggest Sony may delay its next-gen console beyond 2028 to extend the PlayStation 5’s lifecycle, potentially giving Microsoft a timing advantage.

While fans eagerly await official announcements, the takeaway is clear: a 2027 Xbox launch is possible—but Microsoft is reserving judgment until the software and hardware are truly ready.
