Former PlayStation Chief Calls for More Game Variety Amid Soaring Development Costs

Shawn Layden, the former head of PlayStation, has recently voiced concerns about the diminishing variety in video games today. According to him, many of the new releases seem to blend into one another, lacking the unique flair that characterized earlier gaming eras, particularly the PlayStation 1 days. The culprit? The soaring costs of game development.

It’s no secret that making games has become a big-money affair. Reports suggest that the budgets for new AAA games could soar past $300 (approx. Rs 83,400) million, which understandably raises the stakes for publishers when it comes to defining success. Layden emphasizes that these inflated costs have made game developers increasingly risk-averse.

In an interview, Layden expressed disappointment at recent game award shows, noting that the titles showcased were mostly limited to familiar themes like zombie apocalypses, space marines, and medieval knights. “It feels like many games look just like the ones next to them,” he said, pointing out the absence of the quirky creations that used to thrive in the industry. He lamented the lack of originality, stating, “Where’s the next Katamari Damacy?”

Layden believes this narrow focus on specific genres could hinder the industry’s ability to draw in new players. He insists that the current environment doesn’t favor experimentation; developers are often pressured to pitch new games as variations of established franchises or popular trends. “It’s all about sequels and established intellectual properties now,” he added, critiquing the lack of support for truly unique concepts.

Reflecting on the past, he reminisced about how affordable development costs allowed for more creative freedom. Back in the PS1 era, titles could be developed for $5 (approx. Rs 1,390) to $7 (approx. Rs 1,950) million, making it viable to take risks on fresh, unconventional ideas. Nowadays, with budgets drastically increasing, the tolerance for failure has plummeted.

Though there are still standout titles that break the mold, like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which gained popularity due to its unique blend of action and turn-based combat, Layden argues that the gaming landscape needs more of these out-of-the-box experiences. As he puts it, “Let’s have more unique, weird, and wonderful games, please.”
