Xbox’s Recent Studio Closures Mark a Turning Point, Says MMO Pioneer
In a recent chat with MinnMax, the founder of ZeniMax Online Studios, Matt Firor, opened up about the cancellation of his MMO project, Project Blackbird, and shared his thoughts on the current state of the gaming industry. Firor pointed out that the simultaneous closures of Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks felt like a huge red flag for Xbox, hinting at potential troubles ahead.
Firor compared the situation to what happened with EA back in 2008 when the company had to lay off 1,100 employees due to the financial crisis, followed by an even bigger round of cuts later that year. He mentioned that seasoned developers at ZeniMax Online were quick to recognize the warning signs, with many feeling uneasy about the direction things were heading. “The Elder Scrolls Online team had swelled to hundreds of members, and the Blackbird team alone was about 300 strong. People were walking into my office saying, ‘I’ve seen this before. I know where this is going,’” he recalled.
Despite these unsettling times, Firor emphasized that this isn’t just an Xbox-specific issue; it’s a broader challenge affecting the entire industry. While he acknowledged the gravity of the situation, he remained optimistic regarding the future, suggesting that such cycles of boom and bust are common in gaming.
However, opinions among industry veterans vary. Brenda Romero, a legendary game designer, recently stated that the current climate feels even more precarious than the crash of the 80s, emphasizing that things seem to be getting worse. As we navigate these uncertain waters, it’s clear that the gaming community is keeping a close eye on how these developments unfold.
