Subnautica 2: No Fish Killing Allowed – Here’s Why!
Subnautica 2 has just launched into early access, and while many players are diving into its vibrant underwater world, a few are feeling disappointed. Why? They can’t fight back against the game’s predatory sea creatures. However, the developers at Unknown Worlds have made it crystal clear that this isn’t going to change anytime soon.
In a recent chat, lead designer Anthony Gallegos shared that the essence of Subnautica is about existing in this alien environment rather than dominating it. He emphasized, “You’re not here to conquer; you’re meant to coexist.” This approach sets the tone for the game, encouraging players to interact with the marine life around them in a more peaceful way.
While you won’t be able to stab a fish with a knife like in the first game, Subnautica 2 does equip players with some nifty tools. You can craft flares to distract the aggressive ocean dwellers or use a future tool to push them away when necessary. Plus, you can still collect fish to cook or use as bioreactor fuel, so it’s not all doom and gloom!
Interestingly, Unknown Worlds learned a valuable lesson from Subnautica 1. Players started viewing the game’s massive leviathans as challenges to be conquered, leading to a lot of ocean clearing and diminishing the game’s tension. “Once you eliminate the threat, the game loses some of its charm,” Gallegos noted. This realization has led the team to be more cautious about how players can interact with the game’s ecosystem in the sequel.
In a light-hearted moment, Scott MacDonald from Unknown Worlds shared that co-founder Charlie Cleveland was often disheartened by how players used the tools to “murder things.” They want to maintain a balance where players respect the ocean’s inhabitants rather than wipe them out. “You’re not the master of this world; you’re meant to coexist with it,” Gallegos reiterated.
For those really itching to take a more aggressive stance, there are mods available that allow for fish hunting. But in the spirit of the game, the developers hope players will embrace the more harmonious relationship with the underwater world. So, if you’re diving into Subnautica 2, prepare to enjoy the beauty of the sea without the need to bring out the knife!
