UK Considers Stricter Measures for Kids’ Online Gaming Safety
In recent times, the safety of young gamers has become a hot topic for governments worldwide. The UK is now stepping into the spotlight as the online safety minister, Kanishka Narayan, has put forward some serious proposals aimed at protecting children who play popular games like Roblox, Fortnite, and Minecraft.
During a discussion with The Times, Narayan hinted that a complete ban on children interacting with strangers in online games might be considered. This suggestion is part of a larger conversation around a potential ban on teenage social media use, which is currently under review. While no specific games were named, Narayan emphasized that the activities taking place on gaming platforms will play a crucial role in addressing the harmful impacts on young users.
As of now, the UK government hasn’t made any definitive moves towards implementing these restrictions. However, it appears they are looking closely at Australia’s recent legislation that restricts social media access for kids under 16. Interestingly, Australia didn’t impose game-related restrictions in its laws, although it did put a ban on Twitch.
Roblox, one of the most popular gaming platforms for children, has faced significant scrutiny from lawmakers globally. Australia has issued warnings to Roblox due to concerns about grooming and inappropriate content. Meanwhile, legal actions have arisen in the US, with Florida’s Attorney General claiming Roblox serves as a haven for predators, while Texas has even filed a lawsuit against the company over child exploitation allegations.
In light of these serious concerns, Roblox is responding by committing to enhance safety features that prevent kids from engaging with strangers. The company has also pledged to invest $12 (approx. Rs 3,360) million to create a more secure online environment for its younger audience. It’s clear that the push for better safety in online gaming is gaining momentum, and the world will be watching closely as these discussions unfold.
