Xbox’s New Call of Duty Ads Highlight a Tough Year Ahead

Xbox has been making headlines lately, but not exactly for the reasons it would like. As the company tries to navigate through a challenging phase under the new leadership of Asha Sharma, it’s clear that they’re still grappling with some persistent issues. Recent efforts have included significant acquisitions in the gaming industry, but the results have been mixed, leading to layoffs and a subscription service that hasn’t quite hit the mark.

In a surprising move, Microsoft’s gaming division released new advertisements for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which have raised eyebrows for their glaring disclaimer: “NOT ON XBOX GAME PASS THIS YEAR.” This message, which has been spotted on platforms like Facebook and Instagram, feels like a reminder of the ongoing struggles within the company.

The ads began circulating on June 27, and while they might seem straightforward, they reflect a deeper shift in Xbox’s strategy. Just a few months back, Xbox announced that future Call of Duty titles would no longer be available on Game Pass at launch. This decision came after reports indicated that the subscription service had experienced a staggering $300 (approx. Rs 83,400) million loss in sales for titles like Black Ops 6 due to the availability on Game Pass.

The logic is clear: If gamers can play a game for a low monthly fee rather than purchasing it outright, sales are bound to decline. The frustration over Game Pass’s pricing tiers and limitations seems to have driven this decision, leading to better revenue growth as Xbox re-evaluates its approaches.

While it’s a smart move to delay new Call of Duty releases on Game Pass for a year post-launch to boost sales, the fact that these ads have to explicitly state that gamers need to pay for the game is somewhat disheartening. It’s a sign of the confusion surrounding Xbox’s brand messaging, which hasn’t improved even with new management at the helm.

At least now, we know exactly how to spell “Xbox” in official communications—every letter counted! As gamers, we’ll just have to keep an eye on how these changes affect our favorite titles.
