Blast from the Past! Atari Acquires Iconic Wizardry RPGs for a Grand Revival

Get ready for some serious nostalgia, gamers! Big news has just dropped that will have old-school RPG fans buzzing with excitement. Atari, a name synonymous with gaming history, has officially acquired the complete and exclusive rights to the first five legendary Wizardry games and their underlying intellectual property. This means a whole new era is about to begin for one of the most influential RPG series ever made!

For those who might not know, the original Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord, first released way back in 1981, was an absolute trailblazer. It basically invented the “blobber” genre – those grid-based, first-person dungeon crawlers that threw you deep into immersive, complex worlds. While its early graphics were pretty basic (think simple white lines trying to simulate a 3D dungeon), the depth and challenge it offered were revolutionary for its time. It sold incredibly well, especially carving out a huge fanbase in Japan, where it became a massive inspiration for future JRPGs.

The problem for many years has been that these foundational games have been incredibly tough to find and play on modern systems. Apart from a recent remake of Proving Grounds by Digital Eclipse released in 2024, the first five Wizardry titles have largely been locked away in gaming history. But now, with Atari at the helm, that’s all set to change!

Atari isn’t just sitting on these classics; they’re planning a full-blown revival. We’re talking about potential remasters, brand-new collections, and even completely new game releases based on these early titles. And it doesn’t stop there – expect to see a whole range of non-gaming merchandise too, from cool cards and board games to books, comics, and who knows, maybe even TV and film projects! Imagine Wizardry lore hitting your screens!

Now, it’s important to clear up a common point of confusion. If you’ve seen other Wizardry games on platforms like Steam, those are generally from a different branch of the series. After the fifth game, the Wizardry IP took a slightly different path, especially in Japan. Publishers like Drecom own the rights to games 6 through 8, and they’ve also licensed out the IP for other titles, often with a distinct anime art style, like Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls or the gacha-focused Variants Daphne. Atari’s acquisition focuses purely on bringing back the original essence of the first five games, so expect a different vibe from what those later Japanese titles offer.

Atari CEO Wade Rosen himself expressed huge excitement about this move, stating, “Wizardry is such an influential RPG franchise, yet many of the games have been unavailable for more than two decades. We are excited to have this rare opportunity to republish, remaster and bring console ports and physical releases of these early games to market.”

This couldn’t be a better time for Wizardry to make a grand return. The “blobber” genre is experiencing a fantastic comeback, with recent hits like Legends of Amberland, Dragon Ruins, and Cyclopean: The Great Abyss showing just how much gamers still love deep, grid-based dungeon crawling. So, get ready to dive into some truly legendary adventures all over again, or perhaps for the very first time. The magic of Wizardry is officially back!
