Bungie in Turmoil: Marathon’s Game Director Joe Ziegler Exits
Big news coming out of Bungie as Joe Ziegler, the game director behind the recently launched Marathon, has decided to part ways with the studio. This shift comes just two months after Bungie revealed its last update for Destiny 2, a title that has seen better days.
Ziegler’s final day was July 17, and in his absence, the reins will be handed over to Del Chafe III, who previously served as the design lead for Destiny 2. He won’t be alone, though; Julia Nardin, Marathon’s current creative director, will be right by his side to navigate the future of the game. In a heartfelt farewell on Twitter, Ziegler expressed his confidence in Chafe and Nardin, stating they have been strong leaders for the project and are ready to usher in a promising new chapter for Marathon.
Launched in March, Marathon initially attracted quite a crowd, peaking at an impressive 88,337 players simultaneously, according to Steam DB. However, current numbers tell a different story, with only about 6,775 players logging in as of now. Earlier this year, Nardin mentioned that the team has a clear vision for the storyline over the next few years, showing that Bungie still has plans for Marathon, especially as it seems to step back from the once-popular Destiny 2.
Reflecting on his departure, Ziegler thanked the community for their support, promising that the journey for Marathon is far from over, hinting at exciting developments ahead. He will be moving on to new endeavors, with updates on his next steps coming soon.
Bungie, meanwhile, has been in a bit of a shake-up. Following layoffs within the Destiny 2 team, studio head Justin Truman also left his position after a brief tenure. Former Bungie employees have described their time at the studio as challenging, with claims of a toxic work environment surfacing alongside these major changes.
With Destiny 2 winding down, many gamers are left wondering what the future holds for Bungie and its new flagship title, Marathon. Will the studio manage to find its footing again? Only time will tell.
