Chaos Unleashed in House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 3

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the latest episode of House of the Dragon Season 3!

In the complex game of thrones, winning isn’t just about taking the crown—it’s about surviving the aftermath of your choices, and Rhaenyra Targaryen, played by Emma D’Arcy, is learning this the hard way. This episode brings a mix of tension and unexpected twists as Rhaenyra grapples with the weight of power.

The episode kicks off with a jaw-dropping scene: Ormund Hightower, portrayed by James Norton, leads a massive army to surrender to Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), who stands there, calm and collected, sword sheathed. The atmosphere shifts dramatically when the camera reveals Daemon is flanked by not just his dragon, Caraxes, but two more fire-breathing beasts. Ormund’s shiny armor is rendered useless as he realizes he’s just a meal for the dragons if this deal goes south. In a twist of fate, he pledges allegiance to Rhaenyra and—after a surprising “one more thing” from Daemon—reluctantly hands over his nephew, Daeron, as a hostage. It’s a plot twist that almost catches you off guard, especially since most viewers might have forgotten about Daeron entirely!

But here’s the kicker: the Daeron he hands over isn’t the real deal! The actual Daeron is safe and sound with Ormund, leaving Rhaenyra in a precarious position as she contemplates the fate of this decoy. When she invites Alicent to meet “Daeron” before planning to send him off to the Wall, the tension between them is palpable. Alicent’s instincts kick in, and she suspects a trick. Ormund’s duplicitous nature soon emerges, as he breaks his oath and seizes control of a previously unheard-of place called Tumbleton. Clearly, he’s not just a minor character; he’s here to stir the pot.

Meanwhile, Rhaenyra is drowning in a sea of problems, facing endless demands for resources from nobles while her treasury runs dry. With rats scurrying around the palace—thanks to last season’s ratcatcher massacre—she decides to host a dinner for minor nobles, serving them a rat-themed main course alongside the shocking news that she’s raiding their homes for supplies. Talk about a bold move! This episode shows her struggle to balance being a just ruler and addressing the mounting crises, with Alicent bluntly reminding her that good intentions alone won’t keep her throne secure.

With her reign barely a few days old, the brewing discord becomes evident. Rhaenyra is caught between fulfilling the wishes of dragonseed supporters and dealing with Corlys, who is furious about her refusal to legitimize his sons. Tensions rise even higher when her attempt to secure a formal crowning is thwarted by the High Septon, who won’t crown her unless Aegon II’s body is found. Ouch! The Septon’s aversion to dragons complicates matters further, raising the stakes in a city already on the edge.

As if that wasn’t enough, Rhaenyra also wants to track down the miscreant who rode the dragon Sheepstealer. Daemon is dispatched to the Vale not only to find this rider (who happens to be his daughter, Rhaena) but to collect some much-needed gold from the Lady of the Vale, who has been slacking on her promises of troops. Daemon suggests they could abandon their troubles and conquer Dorne instead, but Rhaenyra stays true to her father’s ideals of restraint. This clash of perspectives adds more depth to their relationship.

By the end of the episode, Rhaenyra finds out that Ormund has taken Tumbleton, leaving her with a dilemma: retaliate and risk alienating her loyalists or ignore the provocation and let her enemies regroup. Aemond’s whereabouts remain unknown, adding another layer of unpredictability. Rhaenyra might think she’s won the war, but the reality of holding the throne is proving to be a much tougher battle. The tension is incredibly thick, setting the stage for what comes next.
