Cyberpunk 2077 Hits 40 Million Sales: A Redemption Story for CD Projekt
Believe it or not, Cyberpunk 2077 had a rocky start when it launched back in 2020. While the PC version was somewhat playable, the console experience was so poor that Sony decided to remove it from the PlayStation Store entirely. It was a tough pill to swallow, and as CD Projekt began addressing the issues, we suggested they focus on fixing the game and move on. Fast forward to today, and the game has turned a corner in a big way.
Cyberpunk 2077 now boasts an impressive milestone: over 40 million copies sold! The game currently enjoys a “very positive” user rating on Steam, and it seems Night City is thriving with a bustling population of dreamers. In a celebratory message, CD Projekt’s co-CEO Michał Nowakowski highlighted how this achievement reflects their dedication to crafting immersive narratives that keep players coming back.
Nowakowski noted, “This milestone demonstrates the resilience of Cyberpunk 2077 and is a testament to what CD Projekt does best—creating high-quality, immersive stories.” He also teased the upcoming release of the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 anime, set to drop this fall, which will surely expand the universe even further.
It’s worth mentioning that while this sounds like standard corporate hype, there’s truth behind it. In an industry where many developers throw in the towel after a failed launch, CD Projekt stuck with Cyberpunk 2077, managing to transform it into a highly praised game, underscored by a fantastic expansion pack. Despite claims of the game’s redemption being complete, the studio continues to build on its success.
Interestingly, Nowakowski expressed some doubt about whether they fully regained the trust of every player, acknowledging that some fans may remain skeptical indefinitely. Still, he remains hopeful for future projects, hinting that if not with The Witcher 4, they might win back fans with their next title.
Cyberpunk 2077’s sales were greatly influenced by the initial hype, with 13 million copies flying off the shelves within the first ten days of its launch. However, it still has a long way to go to catch up with The Witcher 3, which has surpassed 65 million copies sold. Regardless, hitting 40 million is no small feat, especially for a title that many thought would end up in the gaming hall of shame, like Mass Effect: Andromeda.
