Diablo 4 Season 14’s Big Clues: Is The Lord of Death Returning?

Gamers diving deep into the recently concluded seasonal storyline of Diablo 4 Season 14 are getting some serious hints about what’s next for Blizzard’s dark ARPG. While many of us might have been hoping for the triumphant return of the OG Lord of Terror, Diablo himself, it seems the developers might be setting the stage for a different, equally terrifying foe.

Before we go any further, be warned: major spoilers for Diablo 4 Season 14 are ahead! If you haven’t finished the “Death’s Awakening” storyline, you might want to hold off.

Season 14, aptly named “Death’s Awakening,” saw players battling a sinister death cult. This cult believed they were bringing an end to Sanctuary’s suffering, especially after the defeat of Mephisto. This twisted quest eventually leads players to a very familiar and unsettling location: the Pandemonium Fortress. Fans of Diablo 2 and the Reaper of Souls expansion for Diablo 3 will remember this fortress well.

Inside, players confront a corrupted angel known as Seraziel. After a tough fight and their eventual defeat, Seraziel leaves players with a chilling, cryptic warning that echoes through the halls: “He is coming.”

Now, who could this “he” be? Given Seraziel’s allegiance and the overarching “death” theme of the season, all signs point to Malthael. For those who recall, Malthael was the main antagonist of Diablo 3’s Reaper of Souls expansion, where he was last seen and defeated – coincidentally, within the Pandemonium Fortress itself. The return of both Seraziel and the fortress makes this setup incredibly explicit.

But the teases don’t stop there. After Seraziel’s defeat, players encounter a mysterious, unnamed stranger. This enigmatic figure delivers a grim message, stating that nothing can be done to stop Death itself. When pressed about their identity, the stranger simply replies, “I am no one, brave child. And for all your might, neither are you.” Talk about a mic drop moment!

Later, if you chat with the questgiver Dannica about this strange encounter, a dialogue option pops up where your character comments, “There was something familiar about that old man,” specifically mentioning his voice. This suggests that this “no one” is actually someone we might have crossed paths with before in the Diablo universe.

So, who could this familiar-sounding stranger be? Could it be a long-lost member of the Horadrim? Is Lorath somehow back from the dead (again)? Or, dare we dream, is the legendary Deckard Cain making a surprise return? The speculation is wild, and only time will reveal the truth.

This entire approach to seasonal storytelling is a fresh direction for Diablo 4. Previous seasons largely featured self-contained narratives that didn’t really tie into the game’s main overarching plot. Season 14, however, feels like a deliberate effort to build towards potential future expansions and major story beats.

Blizzard themselves confirmed this shift. In a recent interview, Dan Tanguay, Diablo 4’s design director for live services, explained that this was an intentional move to connect seasons more directly to the main storyline. He noted that the team wanted to engage lore-focused players, who might not always participate in seasonal power chases but are deeply invested in Sanctuary’s saga. After the conclusion of the Mephisto arc, this season was designed to “take them along on this ride with us.”

Following the conclusion of the “Lord of Hatred” storyline, many players naturally assumed Blizzard would be setting up the return of other major Prime Evils like Baal, the Lord of Destruction, or even Diablo. Now, it appears Malthael is taking center stage, offering a fresh, albeit equally grim, direction for the narrative.

Thankfully, we won’t have to wait too long to learn more about Diablo 4’s future. BlizzCon is just around the corner, scheduled for September 12-13. While Blizzard has already teased some details for Diablo 4 Season 15 (like the ability to use the same character across seasons and the return of iconic items from past Diablo games), we’re expecting even more revelations at the event, including potentially a Switch 2 version of Diablo 4. Stay tuned, Nephalem!
