Doom: The Dark Ages – Revelations: A Game-Changer for Fans

After spending around five hours playing the new Revelations DLC for Doom: The Dark Ages, I can confidently say that it introduces some of the most thrilling combat mechanics the game has seen. Although I haven’t completed the entire campaign yet, the initial impressions are more than promising. The new Chain Spear and improved mobility options are bringing this expansion closer to the high-octane experience of Doom Eternal, making it a must-experience for any Doom fan out there.

Revelations picks up right where the main game left off. While you could technically dive straight into the DLC, doing so would mean missing out on essential storyline context. Plus, you’ll want to be well-acquainted with the Slayer’s vast array of weapons and strategies before jumping in, as this DLC doesn’t hold back. Even for someone who tackled Doom: The Dark Ages on Nightmare difficulty, the early enemy encounters in Revelations gave me a serious run for my money.

This DLC isn’t merely “more Doom”; it’s a unique twist on the classic shooter formula. The new mechanics feel heavier yet maintain the game’s energetic vibe. The introduction of a shield adds exciting offensive and defensive tactics, and when paired with the iconic Doom weaponry, it creates a variety of ways to obliterate the wave of demons in your path. Add in a killer heavy metal soundtrack, and it’s clear that the developers have hit another home run.

Just when I thought I had mastered the combat, Revelations hit me with a curveball by replacing the Shield Saw—one of the defining features of The Dark Ages—with the Chain Spear. While it shares some functionalities with the Shield, it transforms the entire combat flow. Now, you need to time your attacks skillfully to counter enemy strikes. It’s incredibly satisfying to deflect projectiles and counterattack, but the absence of a shield does raise the stakes since a mis-timed parry can leave you vulnerable.

The biggest shift in gameplay comes from how the new spear impacts your movement. With the Shield, you could swiftly bash your way through enemies, but now you’ll throw the spear and pull yourself toward the target, which allows for more strategic positioning. This mechanic feels reminiscent of the grappling hook in Doom Eternal, adding a layer of mobility that was somewhat lacking in The Dark Ages.

One of the simplest yet most welcomed changes is the return of the Slayer’s dash ability. I didn’t realize how much I missed it until I had it back in my arsenal. This addition drastically alters gameplay, allowing for more dynamic movement. Instead of being stuck in one spot while countering attacks, you can now dash around enemies, leap over them, and maintain an agile presence in combat, similar to what we loved in Doom Eternal.

As you progress deeper into the DLC, the combat options expand even further. You’ll regain access to the shield while also being able to switch between the spear and shield on-the-fly. Plus, you can unlock new abilities for the spear by finding hidden Platinum bundles. These upgrades include powerful stabs, aerial slams, and javelin throws, each designed to counter specific enemy types effectively.

However, managing all these new options can be a bit overwhelming. Each weapon has different controls, and I often found myself making mistakes due to the overlapping functions. While I could remap my controls, it’s tricky to find a setup that feels intuitive across all the abilities. It was a steep learning curve, but with some practice, I began to regain my footing.

There’s still a lot more to explore, including a sprawling hub world packed with secrets, the endgame content, and classic levels reminiscent of the Doom legacy. But for now, I’m diving back into the chaos of demon-slaying mayhem. Stay tuned for my full review coming soon!
