Eiji Aonuma Almost Left Zelda After Wind Waker! Miyamoto Stepped In!

Ever felt like you’ve poured your heart and soul into a project, achieved something truly epic, and then just thought, “Okay, what’s next? Time for a change!”?

Turns out, even legends in the gaming world feel this way. We’re talking about Eiji Aonuma, the man who has been steering the ship for The Legend of Zelda series for decades, bringing us some of the most unforgettable adventures in Hyrule.

After the vibrant, cel-shaded world of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker hit consoles, Aonuma actually considered moving on from the iconic franchise. He openly shared his thoughts, stating, “I thought I had done almost everything I could.” Imagine that – feeling like you’ve maxed out your contribution to one of the biggest game series ever!

But as fate would have it, or rather, as Shigeru Miyamoto would have it, Aonuma’s ‘graduation’ from Zelda wasn’t meant to be. The legendary creator himself stepped in and assigned Aonuma to the next big Zelda project: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. It was a clear sign that Miyamoto saw Aonuma’s unique touch as indispensable for the future of Hyrule.

Faced with this direct assignment, Aonuma realized it was perhaps his destiny to continue crafting these incredible worlds. He eventually concluded that he “should give up escaping” his “fate” with the Zelda series. And honestly, aren’t we glad he did? Twilight Princess went on to become a fan favorite, known for its darker tone and epic scope.

From then on, Aonuma has remained a pivotal figure, overseeing every major Zelda release, from Skyward Sword to Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. It’s safe to say that his ‘fate’ has gifted us countless hours of gaming joy. It just goes to show, sometimes the path you try to avoid is the one you’re truly meant for!
