Ex-PlayStation Icon Shuhei Yoshida Gives Valve’s Steam Machine a Big “Meh”

Gamers, assemble! When a legendary figure like Shuhei Yoshida speaks, the gaming world listens. The man who once helmed PlayStation’s global studios and later led PlayStation Indies, a true titan in our industry, recently shared his early thoughts on Valve’s much-talked-about Steam Machine. And let’s just say, his initial reaction wasn’t exactly a ringing endorsement.

After spending a few hours with the device, Yoshida-san took to his platform to deliver a verdict that many might find surprising, given the hype around Valve’s latest hardware. His overall impression? A rather understated, yet powerfully critical, “meh.”

So, what exactly left the veteran gaming executive underwhelmed? Top of his list was the 3D performance, which he frankly described as “just…meh.” He even expressed a touch of nostalgia (or perhaps dread?) by noting the system’s default recommendation for 1080p resolution, quipping, “am I going back to PS4 days?” For a device that carries a significant price tag, gamers naturally expect more than a blast from the past in terms of visual fidelity.

Beyond the graphics, Yoshida also pointed out some frustrating user experience issues. He highlighted games taking an “ooooooong” time to boot up, leaving him questioning what exactly the machine was doing during those extended waits. And the price? He minced no words, calling it “very unfriendly” and stating it’s “hard to recommend to people unless for research.” This aligns with what many in the community have been saying – for its cost, the performance simply isn’t living up to expectations, especially when compared to other mini PCs that offer more bang for your buck.

The new Steam Controller also came under Yoshida’s scrutiny. While he appreciated the concept of touchpads on a controller, he found them “very touchy” and challenging to use. He also wished for tighter, less loose analog sticks – perhaps a subtle nod to the precision he’s accustomed to with PlayStation controllers.

However, it wasn’t all doom and gloom. Yoshida did find a few things to praise. He lauded the SteamOS user interface for its ease of use, appreciated the convenience of being able to power on the system directly with the Steam Controller, and even gave a shout-out to the changeable faceplate and the cool boot-up videos. Ultimately, he admitted that being able to play Steam games on his living room TV was a “reason enough to keep it” for himself, despite its shortcomings.

Yoshida’s initial few hours with the Steam Machine painted a picture of a device with potential, particularly for its form factor and quiet operation, which he called “super good.” Yet, it’s clear the hefty price tag combined with what he perceives as middling performance and a few usability quirks make it a tough sell. For many Pakistani gamers looking for value, this early assessment from a seasoned industry voice might just confirm their reservations about jumping on the Steam Machine bandwagon.
